Hi,

i have I5 8500, vega 64 and 16GB DDR4 @2666mhz (cl 14 -16-16-34)

I run many new titles like AC: Odyssey, The Division 2, BO4, Battelfied 5, BF1 on almost the highest settings with no issues on my 2560x1080 29 ultrawide monitor at 80hz.

But, when i play strategy games like Anno 1800, Frostpunk, total war games, my super computers becomes a Pentium 4 PC!

why is that? how much demanding are those games?

what do they need more than an 8th gen 6 core intel cpu, 2nd strongest GPU from AMD, and high end rams?

Hello.

The RAM timings are set standard for DDR4, I do remember the huge performance increase from 2666mhz to 4000mhz. Make sure your CPU is in ratio around 4.8ghz and you good to go for now. The I5 8500 may not even hit that, its basically a silicon lottery but I'm sure 4.8ghz would be a nice base. Its only 9mb cache so don't expect it to fix everything.

I would invest in 4266mhz RAM and tighten the timings for 4000mhz.

Also what motherboard do you own? This makes a huge difference also.

I know that Total War can easily kill an overclocked i9 9900k. That rig also has 2 GTX 1080 tis and at 1440p and they don't help.

These types of games run at 60fps without issue so setting detail to achieve that is the thing to do.

AI is the main reason these games are hard on the CPU.  Consider that in a game like Fortnite you are the AI.  Since AI is the heavy lifting for CPUs  Fortnite runs fast.

AI in gaming development was really fast at first but popularity of online multiplayer games just about killed it. It is one of the reasons I still play the original Xcon.

Frostpunk too that surprises me... Total war is known for its ludicrous system demands when you want to enjoy the game topnotch. i7's on intel's side are recommended. I even believe with the current cpu releases that its wiser to stick on amd's side of life since they offer more treads then Intel.
Basically wargaming is cpu intensive and not at all gpu intensive.
Ram wise your better of with more memory then with faster memory

Still if your a bit handy with graphics settings you should be able to reproduce a fine picture on your system. Watch out with antialias for example … x8 on 4k … lol i would need to use my year long savings for that pc ?
