PCI-e lanes

Hey, at first I bought an MSI b450 motherboard and a ryzen 5 2400g with intent to upgrade. I now have it paired up with a 1070 Ti and I'm waiting for 3rd gen ryzen. I have a 120gb sata ssd for my boot drive and a 1tb hdd for the other stuff but I've seen quite good deals on a 1tb intel 660p which is an NVMe drive but I don't know if I have enough dedicated pci-e lanes with this cpu ? I saw that my cpu has 12 pci-e lanes, 8 for gpu and 4 for NVMe drives but I have my gpu in a x16 slot, does it take up all my pci-e lanes and will my motherboard recognize the drive or should I get a new cpu first ? Thanks.

Yes you are fine. Gpu will be at 8x and nvme at 4x

Don't get a NVMe drive, even if you have lanes for it.

 

Wait for Ryzen 2 and see if your board will support the new CPUs or not, then make that call.

Oh, that's interesting.  Are we okay with QLC now too?  I recall folks not recommending it due to it being too new.

 

It's like half-NVMe, not full NVMe.  Probably won't see a benefit either way.  But cheaper is good.

With the 2400G the GPU is already operating at 8x, this would remain unchanged because Ryzen has 4 lanes dedicated to NVMe storage

 

Edit: probably read too much into it, this seems repetitive

it is 1TB, so durability shouldn't be worse than say, a 250gb TLC drive. Not hearing those failing before you expect them to.
