Yeah, we are def at a wait and see point for tech.  Rumors circulating about doubling core counts again on the mainstream and whatnot.

Be patient and wait for Zen 2 unless you must upgrade right now this moment.  Then its a no brainer grab a 8700k preferably and couple it with any video card and there won't be a bottleneck and your gaming experience will be smooth as butter,  I don't know if you have freesync monitor or not tho.

If we see 12-16 cores in mainstream by the end of this year, that price will go down.  It will be an i5 at that point.

We sure gonna see 32 core 64 threads :)  ThreadRipper, gosh I love the name of it too.  Not douchebag silly names Intel comes up with,, coffee lake diet pepsi lake ,, skylake oh gosh sighs.

Im shelling out 1700 dollars on the 32c 64t TR ....when it comes out in July.  I just cant wait to see the benchmark numbers compared to a 9900k ..... Ill take 64 threads then 16 threads anyday.  I don't care the game will be 10fps slower, that is ok for me.  I run a DAW and large projects are hard to maintain on my current rig.  Games run fine tho.  I just hope the 4.7Ghz clock is just as fast as 9900k 5Ghz clock... If so then intel has been beaten.

I have made a new build and feel like it's being held back by the processor. Could anybody offer an opinion on this to agree or disagree with that statement? Thanks for your input.

MOBO: H110M-C
CPU: i5 6400 @ 2.7GHz (Turbo is 3.3GHz)

Cooler: Stock Fan

GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060 (3 GB)

PSU: EVGA 500 B

HDD: 2.5" Sata 500 GB SEAGATE

I have almost the exact same specs as you. I used the 1060 3GB for about a year and a half and it's an excellent 1080p GPU. In fact, it's one of the best 1080p GPU's money can buy. The 3GB VRAM does NOT hold it back except when you are trying to achieve ultra settings(unnecessary) or in games like Shadow of Mordor that require 6-8GB of VRAM for the ultra texture packs. That is pretty much the only advantage that the 6GB 1060 has over the 3GB 1060. This doesn't mean you can't achieve 60 fps in these games with your 3GB 1060/i5-6400 combo, especially in 1080p. And for the record, your i5-6400 is NOT holding you back at all. I still use my i5 and have not needed to upgrade it even after upgrading my GPU to a 1070. And I game in 1440p above and beyond 60 fps in tons of games. Usually 85-115 on average, depends on the game.

These are a few things you need to do to get the best performance from your PC:

  • Optimize your PC in general. This includes a multitude of things.
  • Optimize graphic settings from game to game perfectly. And I mean perfectly. You own the perfect teacher for this and that is that 3GB 1060.
  • You're gonna need to add another 8GB of RAM and I assure you that you will not regret it in any way. Sell what you got($35-$40 easy) to put towards 2 8GB sticks($75-$85). Obviously buy the 2 8GB sticks first so you can keep gaming while they are on the way.
  • Make sure you are not running things in the background of your PC while gaming.
  • Make sure your drivers are up to date and/or functioning properly.
  • Monitor your CPU clock speed using MSI Afterburner while gaming to see what it's running at according to your Windows power plan. In high demanding AAA games like Doom, it can only run at a max of 3.1 GHz(your max speed in a 4 core game). 3.3 GHz is your max CPU speed in a 1-2 core game.
  • It's possible that you may need to reset or update your BIOS. This can help with multiple things and solve multiple issues.
  • You can also set your CPU clock speed to whatever you wish in your BIOS to make sure you get the full potential from it. This is a simple process that works wonders. Your stock cooler may or may not allow it to run at the 3.1 GHz you're gonna want it to run at in the higher demanding games like Doom. I currently have mine clocked at 3.0 GHz(with turbo OFF) having used both a stock cooler and now a very similar low profile cooler that I bought just for a little extra help. You're gonna want to set a fan curve in your BIOS to keep the CPU temp down and allow you to hopefully get to that 3.1 GHz. My max fan speed is 85 and that's when it hits 60 degrees(which it never does because I clocked my CPU at 3.0 GHz). When I go above 3.0 GHz, it just does start to hit 60-61 degrees. And yes I know my max CPU temp is 71 degrees. This is why I try to keep it in the 50's so it lasts longer.

All these things seem like a lot that you gotta do but I assure you it's completely worth it and should get your PC up and running above and beyond your expectations. If you want to go through with these things, just let me know and I'll guide you through them one by one or you can choose to try and do them yourself. Or you could choose to not take this advice and listen to other people if that's what you want to do. I'm just letting you know all this stuff from my personal experience with owning the exact PC specs as you from 2016 and to never underestimate the 1060 3GB/i5-6400 combo. It's better than a lot of people think. Especially at stock speeds, I don't even overclock anything.
