Hey everyone,

I need advice on what to do with my pc upgrade. I have a 5year old i5 4690k (that is probably dying as i cant OC it to 4.2ghz and its having other issues) that's bottlenecking my gtx 1080 that i recently upgraded. I feel like its time to upgrade the CPU as gaming on it is a hassle and a half. Can't play bf5 without huge frame drops or rainbow six siege. I'll also need to upgrade my mobo and ram at the same time. The question I have is if it's worth waiting till July to see the new ryzen cpus, or should I not bother and just upgrade to like an i5 9600k. I mostly play games in my free time and just edit videos from my holidays for personal viewing. Should I also upgrade the PSU and SSD as they are both 5 years old?

kind regards, Dave.

Really depends on what they are.

New Ryzen is likely to bring a lot to the table, if more performance isn't a pressing concern, waiting is definitely worth it.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

if i remember correctly it's samsung ssd and xfx 750w psu. I'd really like to play games without the frustration of game stuttering and huge fps dips, but i guess maybe i could wait it out.

If you play at 1080p I would recommend buying either the core i5 9400f or the i7 9700k. The 9600k does not bring alot to the table compared to the 9400f, and the i7 has much higher performance.

Alternatively you could buy the 2700x, but in that case I would recommend waiting to see what Ryzen 3000 series has to offer

What games do you play?

A samsung SSD is likely fine to keep, but an XFX 750 watt PSU could be any number of things, make and model would help.

If you want to have a stop gap upgrade, a B450 board now and a current gen Ryzen CPU for the time being and then a new one when they come out would probably be fine, try to get a deal at a local retailer like Fry's electronics or Microcenter because they often have CPU deals. Then you can sell it on eBay or something when the new processors come out, unless the performance suits your needs of course.

model of the psu? i just checked my orders and it's a XFX 750W Black Edition 80+ Gold

that seems to be fine but why the heck would you even need a 750W in that kind of system? get a RMx 550W if you dont like 550W just get the 650W (there are other models)

Ryzen will certainly be much better in general purpose tasks than your 4790k, however you may not see a very large increase in gaming performance besides stability. For high refresh rate gaming I have to grudgingly recommend Intel.

What kind of cooler do you have?

isn't the i5 9600k more powerful than the 9400f? from what i read that's practically what was stated. I really thought the i5 9600k was in between the 9400f and 9700k.

Grudgingly being the key word... if you can just really try to hold out for zen 2!

that's what i figured, if i was editing more or was rendering/streaming i would probably go for the ryzen cpu right now.

I think i would be able to do so, especially that if intel would be still at that point more preferable for me, the price would drop for intel cpus slightly during the release.

The 9400f only performs about 15-23% than the 9600k while costing 35% less, even ignoring that you need a Z series chipset to overclock the 9600k

i mean my current budge for this upgrade is around £500. i'll just check out if i can manage to find a sale on the i7 9700k.

can you explain how?
i have been planning a system with 9400f and 9600k is just outside budget maybe it would make me feel better about not buying an oc able processor
