Hello all. I'm using a note 9, up to date afaik. I remember using multi window to have 2 apps open at once. Usually I leave YouTube up on the top and browse on the bottom. This functionality would work for any of the apps that didn't require fullscreen. You could enable this by pressing the switcher button, or sometimes just the home button will enable it as a pop-up window.

Recently, I've noticed that youtube blocks this functionality and when I go back into the app I get the ad pop-up trying to sell me YouTube plus.

Is anyone else frustrated that they are disabling features of a device that they don't own?

Imagine YouTube disabling when you switch tabs, is this acceptable?

Is that when playing music on YouTube?

I've noticed that I can multi window a podcast, but not a song.

Ahhhh, I see. YouTube has done that for music on most devices for awhile now I believe to help market their paid version of YouTube.

Regardless of their reasoning, is this not overstepping of some bounds? They are disabling functionality in order to sell it back to us. Maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way, but it feels pretty sleazy.

Overstepping bounds? YouTube owns their platform, and develops the YouTube app - they get to decide how, when, where, and with what features their app supports. YouTube has not disabled your phone's ability to go multi-window - Samsung just provides a framework for apps to hook into for this, then it's up to individual apps to support multi-window mode. YouTube has decided to attempt to monetize their platform by disallowing background playback of most music content, which affects multi-window functionality for their app. You'll have to sign up for YouTube Premium, or look into using a 3rd party app such as YouTube Vanced.

I haven't noted any issue with split screen functionality, popular copyrighted music or not. Though, I run a custom ROM, have activities (in developer options)set to be forced to resize, and I am about 5 months out of date (update-wise) on the Youtube app, so I'm not sure which of the above is the factor.
