Hello everyone,

I am just hear for some opinions on some decent headphones. My budget is 300 dollars. They will mostly be used for gaming but i dont need all this 7.1 surround sound hear peoples footsteps from 30 miles away best mid response ever kind of headphone lol. I also want to listen to music a fair amount. I really just want a good overall sound quality, i can adjust everything else with an equalizer and dolby atmos if I so chose. So what are some recommendations based on this? My first option is a beyerdynamic DT 990 Premium Edition but I honestly no nothing of the brand so im not sure.

dt 990's are great but you will need a dac/amp to drive em unless you grab the 32 ohm vesions dt 880's anddt 770's are also very good they all have all their pros and cons, hd 58x are really good headphones for the price and you wont need a dac and amp to run them. for around $100 ro less you can grab the schiit fulla, fiio k3, fx audio dac x6  to run the beyerdynamics. hd 6xx are great for critical listening but the soundstage isn't wide enough for gaming I find. akg k7xx from massdrop are also a good deal. their are even more options if you want closed backs .

7.1 and surround sound in headphones is a marketing play at best anyway... Yes there is simulated surround sound by means of software but at the bases of it your still using a set of headphones with 1 driver/speaker in each ear...

I personally find using a good set of headphones from a reputable company allow me to hear footsteps better than ANY surround sound gaming headset or software that I have tried.

Now when it comes to headphones,  the DT series do sound great for games very accurate footsteps etc I have tried a pair with CS:GO and was impressed but they were a bit "bright" for listening to music but that is my opinion.   I now own a pair of Senn HD6XX, ATH-M40X, Senn. HD558's & NVX XPT 100's.   I usually dont game in the 6XX they are just too mellow but sound unreal for long music listening sessions or videos.  the 558's and M40X work quite well for competitive CS:GO games and other FPS games.

I have heard the HD58X Jubilee on Massdrop are apparently decent for gaming and music purposes and for the $150.00 you honestly cant beat the price I would look into these or a set of DT's.
