Internet exchanges

After I watched LTT’s video on getting connected to Vanix (the vancouver internet exchange) I started to do some googoling on how that all works but couldn’t find much besides what they are. My question is: How do they work? Like is it multiple connections to a Layer 3 switch? and if that is the case then how does a layer 3 switch works.

To put it in simple, rough terms, they act as a middleman of sorts to aggregate routes from various providers to exchange them between others using BGP and give shorter, more direct paths between customers.
