So I ordered a 500 gig Samsung EVO cause it was on sale. My friend told me however that the 10k rpm velociraptor will basically perform equivalent to the ssd in most cases and is also better for the buck. How true is this?

Very, very false.

A velociraptor isn't that much faster than something like a caviar black hdd.

He says the only benefit of an ssd is the bootup times, installations, and game startups while the rest is on the cpu and the ram.

Could any of you provide a somewhat in-depth list on how specifically it's better than the velo? I'm kinda interested in learning about it and it seems like the only way to convince him is to provide technical details. :P

you don't have to convince him, let him think what he wants because honestly I would just write it off an accept that some people just won't know.

Just tell him an SSD will smash and HDD and leave it at that.

I have a raptor 10k disk, and I can assure you that while it is a nice drive,

it most decidedly does not perform anywhere near to an SSD in daily usage,

across the board.

As an example, here's Anandtech's review on the Raptor, and here's storagereview's

one.

You can find more yourself if you like.

For comparison, you can check out any arbitrary SSD review and see for yourself

how the Raptor measures up against it, for example Anand's review on the Intel 530,

although there's a comparison to the Intel 320 already in the Raptor review.

EDIT: Ninja'd. :D

He says the only benefit of an ssd is the bootup times, installations, and game startups while the rest is on the cpu and the ram.

The random seek time and random read speed of a ssd makes it much snappier than a hdd and makes the whole usage of a system smoother and provides a better experience in general. It's something you need to experience and less so something you can just read about how it saves a few moments here and there.

No longer do you have to wait that slight moment when opening a browser or dealing with something else in Windows with a ssd.

If I already have a 120gb ssd bootdrive, while using the 500gb one for general programs/games/files, it wouldn't be that much of a difference then would it?

That much of a difference for what? Adding a velociraptor? It would be very, very loud. I wouldn't use one if it was free.

Compared to the hdd or ssd?

Compared to the hdd, it would be a bit faster but not by much depending on the game.

Compared to the ssd, it's much slower.

I guess a large deciding factor would be the noise level as well. He also stated that my ssd will die easily while the hdd won't, but i'm pretty sure that is total bs.

I'm sure it's going to be the other way around. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-reliability-failure-rate,2923-3.html

Now he says that I should of still saved the money from the ssd and invest it into a better cpu and mobo (i have a rampage hero and 4670k) because it will benefit me more. Specifically the rampage extreme and an extreme i7.... I don't think I can reason with him anymore...

Then don't. ;)

Seriously though, upgrading to an Extreme i7 is a rather ridiculous proposition

going on the info you've provided about your setup, at least IMHO. I'm not all

that up to date on the latest CPU gaming benchmarks, but surely it can't be

worth the money.

Yea, there is absolutely no reason why I would need a workstation build.
