my 4k editing workstation needs some work

Hey im having trouble finding out what could be the cause of my computer not being able to play 4k footage at 1/4 speed without lagging, I dont know a whole lot about overclocking or what components could be bottle necking so i thought i would i ask for some help.

 

Computer specs:

Cpu: core i9 7920x

Gpu: gigabyte aorous geforce gtx 1080 ti

Ram: 64 gb's of corsair vengeance 4x16

Motherboard: gigabyte x299 aorous gaming 7 

Psu : corsair RM 850x

cpu cooler: msi core frozer L

one 500 gb samsung ssd

one 1 tb samsung ssd

thats really odd. on paper you pc is more than capable, it should be able to playback at 100% resolution

are you using Adobe Premiere ? is it a legitimate copy? 

also what camera is the 4k footage from? and what format does it record 4k footage to?

I am definitely using a legitimate copy of adobe premiere pro 

and the 4k footage is coming from a go pro hero 6 so it uses hevc format

I'm assuming they are adding a bunch of effects to the footage and they aren't able to preview the effects at full quality is most likely what they might have meant.

Otherwise playing 4k footage at 1/4 speed would actually be easier than playing it at 100% speed.

well i am just starting to learn how to use adobe so im not making 10 minute videos with effects and what not, the reason im asking is because i cant get through a couple minutes of editing cutting and joining clips together with one or two effects here and there without getting a very disturbing lag

so i guess my question is how much work/effects can my computer handle before it begins to lag? and how efficiently is overclocking my computer going to help get through the effects, and is it worth it?

set your previews to be much lower quality so the machine is stressed less

4k preview is tricky. However this may be a RAM allocation issue. Check your preferences and make sure that your RAM isn't set to 200 MB or something!!!

I believe these software's cache the videos in the RAM or something. I've had issues like this in the past using After Effects and this technique works like a charm.

 

Just mess around with hardware acceleration, GPU settings, cache, and RAM in your preferences.

 

If none of this works. The bottleneck is either the software, or SSD. Are you using SATA 3.0 cables? What are your SSD speeds? 

The bottleneck in this situation is almost always the drive.
