Hi.  I am planning a build for a gaming pc in the next week and have a question about the cooling.  I will be using the pc for gaming and streaming as well as video editing and web design.  I will likely be using it for long periods of time like 12+ hours per session and when streaming I will likely be gaming and streaming from the same pc.  I play mostly competitive fps games like apex legends and pubg.  I want really really good cooling in it as I do not want heat to be a problem at all.  I will likely have an i9 9900k with a 2080 gpu.  I plan to get a 3 fan gpu like the asus rog strix 2080.  I will likely be playing in 1440p 165hz.

I was originally thinking of getting liquid cooling for it like an aio but then I read some posts on here talking about leaks and that has me worried.  How common are leaks with the aio systems?  If it does leak what kind of damage does it do?  Is aio cooling better than air cooling and if so how much better is it?  Or can I get a really good air cooler that will do as good?  Thanks!

Modern AIOs leaks are quite rare. When they do happen damage depends on how much leaks and where, could be no damage, could take out most of the system. 240mm AIOs and the best air coolers are about on par, larger AIOs than that beat air coolers.

Not common at all.

Depends on the leak and how much coolant has leaked on the components.

A Noctua NH-D15S, or be quiet Dark Rock Pro 4 can easily compete with an AIO at the same price point.

Some users prefer an AIO because the case that they've chosen will not fit larger air coolers like the ones that I've mentioned.

Thank you for the information.  I am glad to hear that you can get a good air cooler that is on par with aio.

Thank you for the information.  I will look into those coolers that you mentioned.  I am planning on getting a large tower case so I will have plenty of room for a bigger air cooler.  Do you have one you would recommend for maximum performance if space is not an issue?

What budget are you looking to spend for the case?

For the cooler or for the case?  I do not really have a budget in mind for either I just want really good parts that are not terribly overpriced.  I am spending about $2200.00 USD for the whole pc though.  I was thinking around $100 - $150 for the case and around the same for the cooler but performance is the priority so if spending $50 more for a part would get much better performance I am open to that.

Top end Air coolers beat 240mm AIO and match/beat 280mm ones. The only AIO's worth a look at are 360mm, but they are expensive.

My advice, grab a top of the line air cooler and be happy, good ones like the NH-D15 will be near silent thanks to noctua's legendary fans.

Thank you.  That makes several people that have recommended the NH-D15.  I think that is the one that I will plan to go with.  Thanks.

There is one more reason why you want to stick with AIO. NH-D15 is a greater cooler but it weighs 1.32 kilo. I'm personally not ok with that amount of weight on a motherboard.

Thank you.  I am new to building a pc.  I did not know that was a thing to worry about.  If the pc is sitting still is that something that could damage it?

its not a thing to worry about.

They are designed to fit, they wont harm your motherboard. the only way it could ever possibly hurt it, is if u put the whole PC in a 4x4 , and went off roading in the thing, bouncing the entire PC around.

Since its going to be sitting stationary on ur desk (i hope :P  )  it wont be a problem. Additional with the motherboard mounted properly to its standoffs, and the NH-D15's mounting kit being used, it wont even warp the board in the slightest.

You need not worry. I used the NH-D14 (just as big) in the past before going into a custom water loop. Its perfectly safe.
