Hello!

I'm looking to buy new budget gaming laptop.

Budget: around 1500 USD

Activities: work first, gaming second. Going to use for programming/video rendering/photoshop. Most demanding games probably pathfinder/witcher 3. Hoping to still be able to play in 3-5 years on somewhat medium settings. Definitely not hoping to get top-tier ultra settings.

Size: doesn't really matter. Currently using Asus G75VW, which is enormously heavy, so I'll not notice difference between 2 or 3 kg anyway :)

Other: must have strong chassis - will have to take it with me everyday home -> work -> home. Should have SSD (or have empty m.2 slot); Hoping to get 17'' IPS display (but fine with 15'', as long as it's way better than alternatives).

As far as I understood from market research, for that money I'm looking for i7 8750H, GTX 1060 and 16GB RAM. I got that i7 is overkill for gaming, but compilation is pretty hard for CPU.

My current options are:

ASUS ROG GL703GM-E5236, 17.3", Intel Core i7 8750H 2.2GHz, 12Гб, 1000gb, nVidia GeForce GTX 1060 — 6144mb (+ get SSD and maybe replace one RAM stick)

ACER Aspire A717-72G-76J1, 17.3", IPS, Intel Core i7 8750H 2.2GHz, 16gb, 1000gb, 256gb SSD, nVidia GeForce GTX 1060 - 6144mb

ACER Predator Helios 300 PH317-52-776S, 17.3", IPS, Intel Core i7 8750H 2.GHz, 8gb, 1000gb, nVidia GeForce GTX 1060 - 6144mb (+RAM +SSD)

I'm actually already preordered Asus, but wanted to know if there are any better alternatives.

Thanks!!!

And you don't need a desktop at all?

Are you sure you need a 6 core i7 in a laptop? As the i5 8300H I think it is, has 4 cores 8 threads and is maybe $1000 or less depending on the model.

You're unlikely to find better performance than what you have already though.

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Location? Fine with 15 inch? No preference on battery life?

Your budget can actually get a RTX laptop (2060N is similar to 1070N fyi)

I have to work from 3 different locations within a week - home, work and cafe (for something around 4-5 hours, which will probably change in a couple of months but anyway). It's easy enough with my G75VW, thus wanted to just upgrade it.

I'm not exactly sure. Comparing prices, some of them cost even more (that's why gl703gm have weird 12gb ram, since it's way cheaper than 16gb). Overall i5 versions cost about 50$ less, so I decided to throw a little bit more money. Anyway, I'll look into it. Thanks!

GL703GM will cost even more (well, 30$ less but only 8gb ram)

Helios costs 50$ less, but with 8gb ram as well.

Aspire will costs about 250$ less, but it uses Intel Core i5 7300HQ 2500 MHz, so I guess that's pretty low?

There is also option for MSI GF72 8RE (Intel Core i5 8300H 2300 MHz/17.3"/1920x1080/8GB/1128GB HDD+SSD/DVD нет/NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060/Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/DOS) for 1350$

Russia, Siberia. Very bad place to get good laptops - have to order them from capital, which takes 11 days to arrive. Also pricing is terrible - cost about 10% more than newegg.

Prefer 17 inch - have to work with multiple windows at the same time, but as long as 15 inch way better (or much cheaper, with same performance), will gladly switch.

Don't care for battery.

In my place cheapest 2060 costs from about 1800$, thus I didn't consider them.

Are the new alienware laptops decent? Because they have upgradable CPUs and GPUs right? Nice feature anyways. Unlikely to be worth upgrading though.

Ugh...

Yandex should be the best one - that's price aggregator with bunch of shops included. Hopefully with english language! If ever ask - select city Krasnoyarsk.

https://market.yandex.com/catalog--noutbuki/54544/list?hid=91013&onstock=1&local-offers-first=0

Quick search for other stores shows that they doesn't really have any options - almost all their laptops way outdated. I'll keep looking.

Also this one have some options - https://www.dns-shop.ru/catalog/

You mean Area 51m? No delided CPU, therefore runs hot. Go for Clevo P750/P775/P870

Thanks for help!

I ended up with GL703GM. Pretty happy with purchase!

I tried Acer Aspire 7 A717-72G with same specs, because it was on sale for 300 USD less, but return it back after 2 days - CPU get easily to 90 degrees under load and it was even painful to touch keyboard.

The only consideration left is either to replace 12gb ram for 16gb or not.
