How to prevent dos/ddos attacks?

I'm not very good at networking and all that stuff, but I do suspect that I am getting dos-ed every now and then. So I have a couple questions;

1. Is there any solutions to hide my IP (proxy/ips/VPN)?

2. How can I stop the attack?

3. How can I find the IP of the attacker? I guess this is done trough the router or CMD?

And because I don't know anything about this stuff, some additional information may be needed :P

The router I have is a "Jensen scandinavia", but I can't find the serial number...

1) Make sure that you have a modem that is in bridge mode, and a router that is physically separate. In other words: don't use what Comcast gives you. Purchase your own.

2) Learn about how ISPs work... Or just read this. ISPs serve IP addresses to gateways. If your modem is in bridge mode, your router is your gateway. If you change your router's MAC address, your ISP thinks you have a new gateway. When your ISP thinks you have a new gateway, it will serve you a new IP address, OR (depending on your ISP) deny you access. Pray that it's the former.

3) Profit. If your router has a MAC address cloning feature (if it's good it will), then you can change your IP as often as you'd like. Be sure to power cycle (unplug and replug) both your modem and your router to complete the update. All of this will take under two minutes if you're good. Practice this and get good at this.

You shouldn't be getting DDosed unless there is some kind of reason like you are streaming.

Take your computer off the internet is about all you can do. But I doubt you would get DDoSed.

I do have a modem and router seperate, but I'm still using the modem the comcast supplied me with... I think it is in bridge mode.

So the only way to "stop" attacks is to just get a new IP by restarting the router and modem?

Get a Gateway to monitor traffic

You can't really stop it. I doubt you're getting DDoS'ed thougj

I said dos didn't I? :P

There is no reason for the person to attack me, all I did was really to say one thing against his opinion.

I'll read trough it now, thanks.

  • Using a VPN will hide your IP when you connect to other websites which is a good start.
  • If, somehow, an attacker gets your real IP, then a VPN will do nothing.
  • If you're able to get a new IP, then the attack will stop routing to you.
  • If the attacker is able to get your IP repeatedly, then nothing at this point can protect you. As the end client, behind an RSP, there's not a hell of a lot you can do apart from hide your IP in the first place.

In seriousness, what makes you think you're getting DoS'd?

My website gets attacked every now and then but I am lucky enough to know who's responsible, so when they DDoS my website I just DDoS their home network and his mother will rage at him. So yeah, that's always an option.
