Regular 1080p

Not really in a hurry either, haven't heard of the next gen ryzen yet

forgot to ask gpu along with res

but if you arent in a hurry

you should look into next ryzen series before making any decision

Hi,

I now have an i5 4670K overclocked, but it's starting to fall behind rapidly.

Considering i have to upgrade motherboard, cpu and RAM i want to make my pc a bit more future proof.

(I don't need 500 fps either. as long as i should be able to play games at 60 or above for a few years i'm good)

I can't make up my mind on which cpu's are a good choice, and why.

CPU's i'm considering:

  • Ryzen 7 2700X
  • Ryzen 5 2600x
  • Intel i7 8700k
  • Intel i5 8600k

Any recommendation or why would be very helpful

I have a 4690k and am planning to get a 3700x or whatever they call it when it's out. I would suggest the 8700k or 8600k if you are doing only gaming but if your streaming or doing more than gaming then get a ryzen cpu.

Do you have a budget for this upgrade?

Regular 1080p

Now I'm curious, what games can your i5-4670k not manage 60fps @ 1080p ?  What GPU is it paired with?  I find it very odd that the 4th Gen i5 (when overclocked no less!) cannot keep pace with 60Hz (not 120-144Hz) 1080p gaming.

A few games just use too much cpu, it's not really a single core problem but multi core. The crew 2 for example just maxes out my 4690k, and i have a 750 ti. The game is pretty badly optimized, but a few other games just need more than 4 cores.

What framerate does it drop to when you state it "maxes out" ?

Honestly just from the fact that your GPU is that old, you would be FAR more likely to see a real game boost if you got a better GPU (even an RX 570 would drastically improve performance comapred with that card for < $148).

Well in the crew 2 for me it drops down to like 40, the game never really runs at 60. My gpu usage never really goes to 100% because the game sucks all of the cpu, even though the framerate is unlimited.

I can tell you that just because you don't see your GPU go to 100%, does not mean definitively that your GPU isn't a bottleneck, and a potentially major one at that.

Your CPU falls in the recommended CPU in system requirements for the Crew 2.  You GPU falls terribly short.  That is your real problem right now:

2x GTX 970

Even on low battlefield 1 (for example) pushes my cpu to 100%, making it stutter all over the place and reaching a "max" fps of 50-60 (somehow)
