Replacing old laptop with desktop

I'm looking to replace an old laptop with a desktop and like to keep as close to or under $500. The old laptop is a Core i7-2720 and 4GB RAM. I'm looking into a desktop to allow for future upgrades.

What I'd like to be able to do (beyond web surfing and file editing) is edit 1080p home videos with Vegas Movie Maker, gaming at 1080/30 or 720/60 (stuff like Fortnite, Minecraft, Rocket League, Modern Combat 5, etc), and maybe streaming.

I did a couple of configs to get the best bang for my buck, and here's what I got...

Userbenchmark PC Build Comparison

  • Baseline Bench: Game 69%, Desk 80%, Work 54%
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-8400 $185
  • GPU: AMD RX 580 $168
  • SSD: Crucial MX500 250GB $50
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2400 C16 2x4GB $58
  • MBD: Gigabyte B360M DS3H $70
  • Total: $531

  • Alternative Bench: Game 68%, Desk 79%, Work 65%
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 $155
  • GPU: AMD RX 580 $168
  • SSD: Crucial MX500 250GB $50
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2400 C16 2x4GB $58
  • MBD: MSI B450 Tomahawk $115
  • Total: $546

Plus I'll need a case, so it'll probably tack on another $35.

Are there better components to use?

Thanks for any help!

I have a similar build to the Ryzen based system you quoted but using a Ryzen 5 1600 / RX 580 8GB / 16GB DDR4 3200 / MSI B350

I think the Ryzen based system is the way to go in these price ranges,  the AM4 socket will take the next couple generations of Ryzen Chips so if you want to upgrade in the future thats easy to do.  Also with ryzen you get overclocking ability where as with intel your going to need an unlocked processor.

The 580 8GB / 1600 @ 3.8ghz combo I have kills 1080p games any esport titles CSGO, Apex, Fortnite you will see very high frame rates,  Even on games such as Battlefield 5 at 1080p Med/high I was getting over 100FPS and with a freesync monitor its a great experience.
