I a trying to download a file that my friend sent me on gmail. When I try and download it my computer says there is a virus and I know there is not a virus

Well whats giving you the warning? Is it your browser? If so, which one?

It is windows defender

Scan the file with Malwarebytes. If that says the same thing as Windows Defender, you probably don't wanna download that file.

If it is in quarantine in windows defender you can release it.

 

EDIT: But I agree with @Crunchy Dragon If both malwarebytes and windows defender says its dodgy, it probably is.

Well if the file is something like a keygen or something used to mod online games, then yeah it's gonna be detected by your A/V just because of what it is. But since we don't know what the file is, your intent with the file, whether or not that person really is a friend, etc. we can only assume worst case scenario here. Do as the others have suggested and/or provide some more detail.
