I am not connected to a hotspot I made sure I have the wifi turned off on the laptop so it doesn't interfere and I ran it again and got the same as the picture

Are you certain it is your desktop alone that cannot connect? If your laptop right now has your public IP no other device should be able to connect. If you connect to the Wi-Fi with your phone does it work? Can you check your phone's IP?

Yes just the desktop alone cannot connect, I have another laptop I can try but it is a stand alone modem without the router I was having issues with the netgear router recognizing the modem was plugged in so I am not currently using it.

When I plugged in my other laptop it says unidentified public network and came up with a missing protocols error saying one or more network protocols are missing from this computer and I tried to use the windows network diagnostic to fix it and it was unable to.

I think I took us down an unnecessary rabbit hole. Lets start with something simpler from the top about the desktop itself. If your laptop is running Windows take it and a known good Ethernet cable and plug the laptop directly into the desktop. You may have to restart each once connected.

If everything on the desktop's end is working how it should, they should each receive an IP in the 172.16.0.0/16 network range. Let me know if they do. If it just says media disconnected then the problem has to be in the tower.

Should I have the internet off on my laptop and should i plug the modem into anything or you just want me to hook up the two with just an ethernet cable.

You can turn off the Wi-Fi so we don't see those IP's again. Windows should auto-negotiate the link and each interface will give itself an IP. Not going to lie. I haven't done this since Windows 7 so I'm only assuming this should work. I don't see why Microsoft would revoke the feature.

Lol all good I was lost on my own so worth trying and for both of them I got 169.254 ip addresses

That's fine. The point is the computer in suspect got an IP. I can't say anything is wrong with the system itself except maybe DHCP. Plug it back into the local network. You mentioned running things like ipconfig /release & /renew but did you try disabling & re-enabling the port?

Control Panel > Network & Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings:

The first one should be labeled Ethernet (or similar) did you try right-click disable then enable?

You can also:

Right-click > Properties > (double-click)  Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties.

Make sure it's set to get an IP automatically.

Yes I have tried disabling and enabling the port multiple times and I did make sure to change it back to obtain ip automatically before the reset.

if you run ipconfig or ipconfig /all what does it tell you? Media Disconnected? Does it give you an IP? (192.168.100.2 to 192.168.100.254) If you look at the back of the computer do you get a light on the Ethernet port?

I will run it again and see if any IP is listed but I know for sure it was saying media disconnected and the ethernet port on my pc and the modem have not been lighting up at all when the modem is plugged into my tower.

Take the cable from the PC that leads to the modem and plug it into your laptop. Do you get internet?

And yes I do get internet I have been using the same ethernet cord to make sure it was not an issue with the cord but when I plug that cord into my laptop I was able to receive an internet signal.

Well, I only have one thing left we can try but even if it works it's not a good permanent fix.

Assign it this IP info:

IP address: 192.168.100.50

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: 192.168.100.1

Then your pick of DNS, 1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1, 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4

Even if you don't have Internet with that. See if it lets you ping 192.168.100.1 and if you can get to the WebUI of the modem.

I assigned it those and no internet and I am unable to ping the modem it says transmit failed. general failure.

I screwed up an address did you use "Default Gateway: 192.168.100.1"

So peer to peer communication works but it refuses to acknowledge the router. I'm seriously out of ideas.

Between the last the computer having Internet and when you discovered it no longer did did anything in particular transpire? A Windows Update or did you install anything that night?

No I literally just played games on it for like 10 hours to be honest maybe more lol and turned it off to go to sleep, woke up to play some more since I took the day off and the issue was happening. I don't want to but I was considering doing a fresh install of windows possibly as a last resort to see if that helps. I was also considering getting a usb to lan network adapter to test and see if that works as another temp fix but was hoping to get the issue resolved.

I wouldn't resort to that unless nobody else happens to have a solution and we confirm the problem is Windows. We can see if it really is Windows by booting another OS. Making a Linux bootable thumb drive would get the job done. It'd load the network drivers and give you internet. Assuming the problem is Windows.

I can definitely try that tomorrow I'm going to have to call it quits for tonight I have to get ready to go to sleep for work tomorrow, but I will try making the bootable thumb drive tomorrow after work and report back with an update, I really appreciate you sticking it out tonight and trying to give me solutions not sure how you aren't tired yet lol

Quote me or @ me (ex. @ShadowWolf211) when you do get back. That way I know you replied and I've been up for the past 16 hours so I plan to quit soon myself.
