So I'm beginning a new pc build. This is my first time from scratch, my previous pc was an old Dell, I added ram, a GTX 970 GPU, upgraded the processor to an Intel 3770k, got a new power supply, and case. That's the extent of my experience building.

I'm looking for suggestions on my build, budget is not entirely an issue, but don't want to needlessly waste money.

I just ordered my first round of parts which are...

Intel i9-9900k

MEG z390 Godlike Gaming Motherboard

Evga RTX 2080 ti Black Edition

I want to get at least 16 gigs of ram

I was thinking of a Samsung 970 Evo 1tb for the main storage drive

I picked up a used Corsair Obsidian 750D case that still had all the extra components at a yard sale a while back for like $20, so I would like to use that if possible, but if it's too outdated I can get something else.

My goal for this PC is to double as a workstation / gaming rig. Although I might not use it, I would like to be able to overclock it considerably so would need a LOT of advice on liquid cooling as well.

I was thinking of upgrading my display to 1440p @144mhz - 240mhz at 32 inches with gsync, but am having difficulty finding a monitor. That upgrade can be done later, as I'm happy with my 32 inch 1080p @ 60mhz.

So any suggestions on the remaining parts, such as cooling, power supply, ram? Anything I'm missing?

Are you sure the motherboard has an updated bios supporting 9th gen CPUs? Z370s need a BIOS update to support 9th gen CPUs, which means you may need to use an 8th gen CPU to run the system and update the BIOS, then switch the CPU out. It may also be updated from the box which means it does not need any tinkering with

The difference between SATA SSDs and NVME SSDs in most tasks are barely noticeable. It is only noticeable if you frequently move 4K videos around since they are usually of large capacities.

Wasn’t sure what kind of storage you need so I added a 1TB SATA SSD and 1TB HDD

thats like the major parts you need to consider that will cost the most, everything else maybe besides memory

are you looking to overclock the cpu and gpu? or just cpu or gpu

are you also willing to do custom water cooling with soft or hard tubing? or would you just like an All in one unit or an expandable AIO?

monitor refresh is measured in hz, not mhz

 windows key?

make sure your case has all the standoffs as well if you bought it second hand

CPU: i5-4690k @ 4.4 GHz | RAM: 12GB DDR3 1333MHz | GPU: Sapphire Pulse RX 580 4GB

My apologies, it's the z390, comes 9th gen ready. I'll edit post to fix.

Oh yeah, I'll definitely get the windows key. The case has the standoffs, I believe the person never actually used the case if I remember they got it, but never used because of how large it is.

I am open to getting a new case if anyone can suggest, but it will need to fit the Eatx mb, graphics card, and enough room for more than adequate cooling. I like the drive bays in the front for the possibility of Blu-ray, and maybe adding controllers.

That's really good to know!

I'm completely a novice with cooling, but would like to water cool both the GPU and CPU.  I have been looking stuff up, so it'll most likely be running custom loops, looks like flex tubing.

Thank you for that!

Doesn't want to waste money and orders an MSI Z390 Godlike ?

From what I understand it's a very good board for overclocking, and I like the audio codec. If it's something I want I don't see it as wasting money.

That being said is there anything else you might suggest?

It should be a good overclocker for that much money ?

Something like the Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master would be a cheaper option. Still a very high end board with a 12 phase VRM.

If you are set on spending that sort of money on the Godlike, then consider the Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Xtreme as well.

I actually considered the extreme, what advantage does it have over the godlike?

They are pretty similar to be honest. Both are completely overkill for the most part. From the few reviews I have seen most seem to favour the Gigabyte board. Think Hardware Unboxed did a Z390 review and he preferred the Gigabyte.

Buildzoid has a video on Youtube on the Xtreme. Haven't watched it myself but it is linked below if you want to watch it.

watch jayztwocents, his videos on watercooling are great and hes semi considered the watercooling god of tech youtube by some
