Picking a 1080ti

Hello everyone! This is my first post here but I have been watching linus for a few years now. I am going to be picking out a 1080ti to upgrade from my existing MSI 980ti. I was thinking of going with MSI 1080TI Gaming X due to JayzTwoCents video on it and simply because it matches my build. I was wondering the differences on other cards. Does it really matter which card I chose via performace? Any other cards that outperform or outcool the MSI that is pure black or something to match a red and black build?

Some cards do have better cooling, but Gaming X has one of the best PCBs out there, so go for it, especially if it matches your build.

Agree. Don’t see the point in a 1080ti when 2080s are newer and better with rtx and dlss.

Holy crap, i cant actuall believe that prices fluctuate SO much between countries. Here, in Croatia, u can get a used 1080 Ti for 450-600 dollars, but a new 2080, non Ti is 1100 dollars, 2080 Ti being nearly 1600.

Not that I don't believe you Srius. But could I get some other input on this? Should I grab the 2080 instead of a 1080ti??

If you want brand new, then yes, 2080 would be a better buy if u care about RTX and DLSS. 1080 Ti has more VRAM though, but 8GB on 2080 is still plenty.

Yes 2080.1. It’s new. 2 . You get 2 new games ($80 valued). 3. Same/better performance especially with newer drivers and rtx and dlss. Trust me,,you ALWAYS want new tech, 1080s are 2 years old tech.

Well don’t wait too long. Once this sale is over it’s back to $700+.

This is is the way to go for sure if you are looking at 1080ti. MAKE SURE YOU USE the code on Newegg to bring the price down to $680

Hmmm, it all comes down to pricing, and ofc, if u dont care about ray tracing and dlss. I, personally will not get any RTX card in near future because its just not worth it, price to performance rate is ridiculous. Used 1080 Tis are half of a new 2080.

If you are talking aftermarket, the best air cooler/ PCB combo on a commonly available (not counting Galax HOF and EVGA Kingpin) 1080ti is the ROG Strix. That being said, EVGA SC, FTW3, Gigabyte Aurous, MSI Gaming X and Gaming X Trio are all great PCBs with great performing coolers.

If you're buying new, it makes more sense to get a 2080. I personally like a beefier cooler because they're quieter (again higher end cards from MSI, EVGA, Gigabyte and Asus) but others will tell you just to buy whatever is on sale. Just stay away from blower style cards as they are loud and hot.

Main rig-- Corsair 460x, Asus Strix z270, i7 7700k @4.8 1.3v, Noctua u14s, 16gb 3200mhz Corsair Vengence RGB Pro, Asus Strix 1080ti OC, Samsung 970 Evo 500gb, 2x Seagate FireCuda 2tb, EVGA SuperNova G3 750w Gold, 6 Corsair LL120 RGB fans

HT/VR Mini ITX build-- Thermaltake Core V1, Gigabyte z270n WiFi, i5 7600k @4.8 1.3v, Thermaltake Contac Silent 12, 16gb Gskill Aegis 3000mhz, Zotac RTX 2060, 1tb Inland SSD, PowerSpec 650w Bronze, stock case fans

There is a used MSI Gaming X for $850 on Newegg. But a new 2080 linked previously here is on sale for $723 with the discount applied. probably just gonna grab that if there isn’t that much of a difference. Especially considering it’s two years newer.

I was more talking like used on eBay. I picked my card up for under 600 bucks, that seems to be about the going rate for most cards still if not slightly over for more desirable models. I got lucky though because mine came with a factory warranty, not all eBay sales work out that way.

That being said new PC hardware if you can afford it is always objectively better, IMO. The 2080 is a great performer, it will blow your 980ti out of the water.

the 2080 is actually a tiny bit faster than the 1080 ti consistently, so if you are paying the same amount, go with the 2080.
