Ok, I need a little help with my BIOS.

Specs: AMD Ryzen 5 2600, RTX 2070, MSI B450 Tomahawk

My issue: When I boot my PC, there is no screen that says the key to press to enter the BIOS. Its a black screen until windows boots. I know what the key is so I press DEL, and then I tried F11 to get into the boot menu, in which i get a black screen with no output to any port on the GPU or motherboard. I saw if I could boot with the UEFI Firmware Settings, but the BIOS is set as Legacy and not UEFI (I don't know how to change it.)  I used BIOS flashback on the board to update the latest BIOS and that didn't work either. I have also tried clearing the CMOS.

I need to get into the BIOS to boot from windows on my SSD.

If you have any info or questions, please leave that below.

Thanks!

I ran into a similar issue with my new motherboard and CPU last week.

  1. Press the 'Start' button, and go into 'Settings'.
  2. Click on 'Update and Security'.
  3. Click on 'Recovery' from the menu on the left-hand side.
  4. Click on the 'Restart' button under 'Advanced startup.'
  5. A list of options should come up -- choose 'Troubleshoot.'
  6. Click on 'Advanced options.'
  7. You should then see 'UEFI Firmware Settings.'
  8. Then hit the 'Restart' button.

System will restart, and should automatically take you into the BIOS.

For me, at least, after doing this, the BIOS blast screen would come up, and stay up longer.

I am on a Legacy BIOS, would you happen to know how to change that to UEFI?

According to the MSi B450 Tomahawk motherboard manual, there is NO Legacy only.

There is only [UEFI] or [Legacy + UEFI].

That makes sense since Windows 8 / 8.1 / 10 are UEFI supported (8.1 and 10 are UEFI only?)

You should be able to get into the BIOS with my above steps, even if it is set to [Legacy + UEFI] mode.

Once to DO get into the BIOS, make sure 'Full Screen Logo Display' is set to [Enabled].

I have no idea is that means Legay + UEFI, but in the advanced restart, I do not have the UEFI Firmware option

And since win. 10 and 8.1 are UEFI only, probably explains why I do not have a BIOS

It means both Legacy and UEFI mode is available.

At the Step #6, 'Advanced option' step, do you see a 'see more recovery options' button there?

You are running Windows 10, why would you not have a BIOS?

UEFI = BIOS ...

If you cleared CMOS correctly, it should have reset all your UEFI BIOS settings back to default.

  • 2 weeks later...

My motherboard is an MSI B450 Tomahawk. I am tired of typing this out. Someone help or I will just buy a new PC. I have reset the CMOS ans installed the newest BIOS. It says I  have a legacy BIOS and not UEFI so I don't have UEFI Firmware boot options. I don't even get the MSI logo when I boot my PC.

I only want to a clean install of windows on my new SSD and change it to my default boot dive, but I cant boot from the flash drive without a BIOS.

The image is exactly what my advanced startup screen looks like.

Try using the BIOS key to get into it on startup. I'm more experienced with ASUS boards, so try F2, F12, DEL, and F8. Maybe someone else knows and can help.

I'm not sure what frame of the Adv. Startup menu that is, but it should be somewhere. If the above doesn't work, try poking around

Oh yeah I forgot to mention I have tried every key. I looked it up that the key is DEL for my mobo, but when i press it on boot, it has no output on any output.

Good idea, only problem is that that switch would usually be in the BIOS it self. Does the MOBO have USB BIOS flashback/update or a OS software based updater tool? Try updating to the latest BIOS. Might help

I have tried doing both of the HDMI and DVI on the mobo. I have also tried on my video card. Its not exactly a black screen, my monitor just doesn't display anything and it goes into sleep mode.

Good idea, only problem is that that switch would usually be in the BIOS it self. Does the MOBO have USB BIOS flashback/update or a OS software based updater tool? Try updating to the latest BIOS. Might help

Yes the mobo has a flashback button. I cant find any UEFI updates though. Perhaps you know of one?
