4k video crashing my display output

I have a 1080 and a Ryzen5 2600. I run them through a 144hz 1440p panel and everything is gucci. Until I tried to run a 4k video from my hard drive, it shows laggy (when it does show something) and my monitor seems to turn off and on again repeatedly. I'm really new to displays and stuff so I can't grasp whats happening here. Any help? My guess would be that either something isn't getting enough power or the DisplayPort 1.4 that came with the monitor isnt capable of 4k video flow, something like that? Neither of those would be my area of expertise either so I'm still kinda stuck. Any input is appreciated. 

 

Solutions I've tried so far -

Reduced 144 to 60Hz refresh.

Turning it on and off again.

Running the file off of internal SSD.

U shouldnt be seeing any lag, even if the video cant be displayed at 4K it will downgrade to 1080 to get displayed.

 

Have u the latest video drivers and video codecs installed on your PC?

OP what are the file types? 

 

Also what software are you using? 

 

This may just be software related as the 100 and the 2600 should have no issues decoding

Is this DRM protected content?  As that could suggest a HDCP problem.

 

Does fast movement in games work okay at 1440p?  That would likely eliminate the display port cable as an issue.  As when the signal is right on the edge it can display static images fine but die once a lot of changes are happening on the screen at the same time.

Im using VLC, HEVC file. I learned that I need to pay microsoft a dollar for their codec but I doubt that I can get it working for my player, I'm rather fond of VLC and really used to it right now. This won't be a long term thing I'm just having fun with my new monitor and satisfying a curiosity

I got it working on Windows with a free codec app from their store. So its possible on the current config. Its also not a locked file or anything. to admit, I;m just testing it so I downloaded it off of a torrent. Sorry I know, I know

I use Pot Player.  Its like VLC Player with its own codecs and so on but i find it uses less system resources.

I use VLC purely because 99% of the time I'm on Linux so I know it will work consistently between Linux and Windows. (well consistently terrible if you try to jump around the timeline and lot and frame advance LOL)
