I built my younger brother a gaming desktop 18 months ago for around £2000 (specs below) he now wants to sell it and get a laptop instead. He doesn't really understand depreciation and thinks he's gonna get £1800 for the PC where it's more likely to be £1000 at most I reckon, but I'm not 100% sure so if anyone could help with that, that'd be great, and also wether it'd be better to sell as a complete system or dismantle and sell off the parts separately.

With regards to the laptop, he's moving away from AAA gaming and is looking more at flash and indie games so is happy to take a weaker GPU, he's got it into his head though that he needs an i9 (his heaviest workstation load is going to be school homework) which is obviously ridiculous and makes it stupid expensive.

I've been out of the laptop game a while, but I'm thinking an i5, 6gb 1060 something like the HP Omen 17 or Acer Predator Helios 300 should do him nicely or even something a bit custom like the following from pcspecialist for £1000

Proposed laptop around £1000

Current desktop specs - I suspect about £1000, brother wants more but I'm not sure he'll get it
Case NZXT 530 Black

CPU i7 7700k

Interested in any trades?

Potentially, but it would have to be the whole system for a laptop and it'd have to be a laptop that was around £2000 18 months ago (something like the alienware 15 r3 max-q for example) and it couldn't be too expensive to ship. I suspect shipping the system from the UK to the US would cost a small fortune.

I'll have to ask him, though I suspect battery life is not important to him as it'll be plugged in most of the time.

Budget will depend on what he can get for the desktop plus what he can save so somewhere between £1200 and £1800 is likely.

Tell him that he should only sell his PC if he really needs the portability; it would be a huge downgrade going to the laptop you listed

I have tried, he doesn't really need it, but he's a kid so he is impulsive and very flavour of the month so I said I'd see what it's worth and what he could get then he can at least make an informed decision.

I spoke to him and managed to persuade him to hold onto the desktop for now.

Once he realised he would not get the money he wanted and would be taking a big downgrade he was a bit more agreeable.

As suggested I'll probably help him get something cheap he can do homework on and light gaming and keep his desktop as his main gaming machine.
