did someone here tried it for himself?

i noticed that it have a 12v port, can I connect 12 v adapter instead of the 24 pin connector, does GPU that does not require external power such as the gtx 1050 or the rx 460 work fine with that?

and can I game with the laptop or do I have to connect an external monitor?

thanks in advance and have a great weekend.

It looks that way, you would need a 12V adapter that can supply 75W, or a bit more than 6 amps, I would go with something like a 12V 8A power brick for safety.

On a different note, what the heck is that cable, Mini PCIe to an HDMI connector?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The 24 pin adapter just shorts the two pins so that you can use a standard power supply.

Watch a few videos about those before investing. They aren't very compatible and very finicky to get working.

I actually watched some videos, including LTT who does not recommend it, but there are some who recommend it.

I saw a guy that manages to run it on a model similar to mine, but I still have some questions, did you tried it for your self?

  • 2 months later...

I'm going to test 1 of these in my old VAIO VPCF126FM with a Intel i7 740QM, but not for gaming. I need to render images in Lumion, that needs a "big" GPU, but a relativelly small CPU. Fortunatelly my laptop have a Expresscard port, so I'll don't need to take apart it each time that I render images, nor let the cable hanging in the laptop, just plug the adapter in the Expresscard port and thats all.

My only doubt about it is if the BIOS can recognize another GPU, maybe yes because it have Intel integrated graphics and nvidia GT 330m card already.
