This is generally how it works. Older products will become cheaper when they are superseded by newer products.

Then the cycle sometimes flips once old systems start failing and there's low stock availability.

 

Tried looking for a 'cheap' second hand Haswell k chip last year to upgrade my locked i5-4570, and most places wanted over $300 for new unopened i7-4770k.

 

Ended up just going 8th gen.
