Before 1802, UEFI 1601, with "Asus multi-core enhancement" disabled. I haven't made any hardware changes since day1.

I upgraded UEFI along with other drivers when they were updated on Asus website. I noticed the "shadowsocks' freeze as soon as I upgraded the UEFI (before new drivers were installed) but didn't give much thought until it freezed in game.

Yes, I also switched to the latest Nvidia DCH driver, which required a full wipe by DDU.

Darn I think the BIOS flash botched your motherboard or something rather.  I don't think ASUS will let you downgrade BIOS, but give it a try, grab a older BIOS like the one you were using before the sh*T hit the fan.  You did a BIOS change and OS update and it botched things up.

My pc is having small freezes occasionally then resumes like nothing happened. There is no related log in event viewer.

Scenario 1: Boot into windows, run "Shadowsocks v4.1.4" on my desktop immediately. Windows freezes for half a second, cannot move cursor, 100% reproduce. (Self deployed so it's probably not connectivity issue)

Scenario 2: Overwatch, freezes randomly, maybe twice a day, video and audio both freeze for as long as 3 seconds. For example "I've got you in my siiiiiiiiiiiiiii....", when it recovered I'm walking against a wall at the edge of the map. However the freeze appears to be random not Ultimate related, it can freeze even when I'm waiting for countdown.

I had this problem on day 1, after painfully uninstalling and reverting everything I nailed the problem down to "Asus multi-core enhancement". I remember to disable it every time after upgrading the UEFI (I haven't tried OCing my CPU because of this problem), smooth sailing until yesterday I upgraded it to 1802, which is yet another "improve system stability' and nothing else in changelog. Disabling "Asus multi-core enhancement" did not work this time, which brings me to...

Scenario 3: Assassin's Creed Odyssey, after releasing RT on my controller, my character did not shoot until 1 second later. Animation and sound appeared to be still running unlike Overwatch, but objects and enemies aren't moving.

  • Operating system: Win10 x64
  • I7-8700k @3.7GHz (not manually overclocked in any way)

  • Gigabyte RTX 2080 (WF OC 14000MHz)

  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000 2x8G (XMP enabled)

  • Mobo: Asus Z370-E (UEFI v.1802 latest)

  • PSU: Corsair RM750x

  • SSD: Intel 760P 256G NVMe M.2

  • HDD: Seagate Barracuda 3TB (2016 old model I think)

  • CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15s

  • Chas1 Fan: Noctua NF-A14 PWM x2

  • Chas2 Fan: Fractal Design Dynamic X2 GP-12 DC x2 (shipped with PC case, ik...)

  • Case: Fractal Design Meshify C -TG

  • BIOS version: Asus UEFI v.1802 latest

Memtest86 returned 0 error: 4 pass everything except hammer test.

What other tool should I use to diagnose the issue?

Also what other options I need to disable to make sure my mobo isn't auto overclocking without permission? The AI Tweaker in UEFI can't be turned off as far as I can tell...

When were things good without freezing ?  Did you change hardware recently ?  Your system looks good, this shouldn't happen.  For heck of it try DDU in safe mode and return to normal mode and install latest nVidia drivers and let us know what happens.

Ok I will downgrade the BIOS manually if it hits me again in game. Configuring everything from scratch after each flash was always a bit bothersome... xD

Sorry for that, but I have a good feeling about this.  We will sort it out.

Could be the HD and Widows.

Widows likes to "check disk". If your HD is having a firmware issue at could add the pause.

Easy to test. Disconnect the HD.

  • 7 months later...

update: I haven't experienced this issue for a long time now.

But today when installing new parts my pc wouldn't boot with dram_led lighting up. So I took one of the RAM stick out, stared at it for a while, and found a short hair stuck between its heatsink and connector. Not sure if it's the cause for all those problems, why memtest86 didn't pick it up, or why I didn't find it when installing the RAM.

Anyway at least my PC boots up normally now.
