Can I use my hard drive from out of my gaming rig in my laptop or would I have to buy a new hard drive that works with laptop?

If your gaming rig has a 2.5 inch HDD then sure it'll work but if it uses a big 3.5 inch HDD then you're sunk unless for some strange reason your laptop can fit a 3.5 inch HDD.

"gaming rig" i assume you have the big 3.5' hdd, but if its a SSD, then yes it can, as ssd mostly only 2.5'.

For the big hdd, you can get a HDD docking or USB3 to SATA 3.5' HDD enclosure and just plug it in the sata 3 port in your laptop.
