Games freezing when Controller plugged / unplugged

Whenever I plug in my Xbox One controller into my PC via USB my games freeze. And when I unplug it, it freezes. For some games they don't tend to have freeze but others they do. The most notable have been Dark Souls 3 and Watch Dogs 2. Where they freeze longer than 30 seconds. I'm using Windows 10 Pro N, 1600X, 1050ti, 16GB of RAM. Not sure what the issue could be, but hoping for suggestions. Thanks.
