Hey, im looking to upgrade my CPU. I’ve looked at i7 8700, ryzen 7 2700 and i5 9600k. But i really dont know what to get. I play mostly PUBG, CS:GO and Fortnite and i stream a bit here and there.

So i was wondering if someone who knows alot could recommend a good CPU. My budget is around $350-$400 minus the cost of a motherboard that supports the CPU. (The motherboard i have now is super old and it definetly wont support newer CPUs)

(I have a 1070 if that helps you figure out what will work fine with my GPU)

Thank you!

Robin.

I would go Ryzen. It is a tremendous value for the amount of processing power you get, plus if you are into streaming having those extra cores and threads will help a lot

Like AdvancedMicroDisapointment said you should go Ryzen due to it being a better bang for the buck but for specifics go for a Ryzen 5 2600 with a b450 motherboard and 16GB of G.Skill Aegis that is running at DDD4-3000. This would cost you $338.66 while using the included wraith cooler as well as taking advantage of rebates. Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Y2Nfhy

I'll third the Ryzen vote.  I think they're very versatile processors, and the coolers they come with is pretty much all you need.  Also, you don't need a B450, this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079NH98GS/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 comes with the updated BIOS to support the Ryzen 2xxx processors.  I know because I've bought five :)  I also like the interface a little better than some of the others.  I've built probably 10 or more Ryzen PCs for work and it's the board I keep coming back to.

I think you could go Ryzen 7 2700 though, just go with 8GB RAM for now (probably all you need) https://www.amazon.com/Ballistix-Single-PC4-24000-288-Pin-Memory/dp/B07HP8PVVH/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1549406866&sr=1-4&keywords=8gb+ddr4+3000 Then when you can, just add another for the dual channel performance.  Totals to 382.

What RAM do you have now?  If it's not DDR4, you need to budget for new RAM also.

Also what monitor are you using, is it 60Hz 1080p, or more like 120-144hz high refresh rate G-Sync?

I will have to check what RAM i have, but the monitor is a 144hz 1080p :D

If you are chasing high refresh (120+) at modest resolutions, which I assume you are since you cited CSGO, I recommend the i5-9600k over any of the Ryzen alternatives.

If you are looking for cinematic (60+) GPU bound higher resolution gaming, Ryzen is fine.

This ^

If you want to take full advantage of being able to display 144hz, right now sadly Ryzen isn't as good as Intel at that so I also recommend getting the 9600k.  Make sure to get it with a Z390 (or Z370 w/ bios update) motherboard to be able to overclock and take full advantage of it.
