System Upgrade

I've been thinking about upgrading my system (i5-8400, GTX 1050 TI, 16GB of RAM, Asus Tuff Z370 Plus Gaming Motherboard) but I'm not sure which component I should upgrade. I currently play at 1080p and do have games that dip under 60fps like Arma 3, I would like to try and stabilize.

how much money do you have to work with? if you can, i would say go the 2060 route.

Right now not enough to immediately go out and buy anything but I recently got a job that's paying me about $400 a week, as I take some time off from college (waiting on a deployment in 2020 or 2021) however my tax return should be looking pretty thick (yes with 2 c's) as I got about $500 last year and I made even less this year so it should be bigger. (in other words besides other expenses I'll have I should have about $800-1k to upgrade). I will also mention that I am currently not using and SSD (though I have one laying around that's a 275GB one) as that will require me to completely reinstall windows and reformat my current 2 HDD. I don't have anything super important document wise, it's just going to be a MAJOR pain in the ass to completely reinstall everything, though I guess it does get me a pretty clean slate from programs I am no longer using.

well, if we're talking right now I would suggest a 2600/580 combo personally. It's like a 8400 with 2 more cores and a cheaper version of the 1060.

 

btw, if you do want to go intel, at least get a better board than that

so, you have ram, a mobo, a good cpu, and a 1050ti. 

 

if you can get to the point of where you can afford it, i would say pick up the 2060 (EVGA Black edition) for 329.99. 

 

if you want to go for a cpu (im guessing you have a stock cooler??) then maybe go for a 8600k if you can afford a cooler like the arctic freezer 34 or 33.

i mean, he can avoid upgrading most of his things, but i totally agree with the combo you suggested.

true... but I'm not sure what he's using right now... so I just listed the ideal combo for the budget

He just wants to know out of that what to get better. that’s why I suggested just grab the 2060

Really? This motherboard (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813119037&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-) is really that bad? I've had a great time running my RAM at 3200Mhz, does it just not handle overclocking real well? What about an upgrade to the i7-8700 instead of the Ryzen 2600, considering the fact that I would need a new board for the Ryzen 2600 would the i7-8700 be a better value?

the ram isn't really the problem... the vrm's just aren't cooled that well. so yes, it doesn't really overclock on the cpu side. considering you actually have this already, I would suggest upping your gpu to for example a vega 64, if you have the psu for that

If currently, all you do is gaming, you probably wanna step up your GPU. It will be a big difference since you don't have the hardware that will potentially bottleneck it. Now if you don't have a monitor that runs higher than 60hz, it might not be worth it.

If you want me to be more specific here are my parts (except for the base all I can tell you is that its big enough to fit a 240MM rad at the top and needs to be replaced at some point because I accidently ripped off the top dust cover and destroyed the top front USB cables <---long story)

So, 2 things. Get a nice crucial MX500 500gb m.2 drive. 67.99 can get it for as low as 50 when it’s on sale. Get your os moved to that, you will feel a night/day difference. 

 

Second, grab either a rx580 or a RTX2060. Both will fix your FPS problem. 

 

And maybe 3rd, pick up a 144hz monitor (for as low as 160) to get a nice jump in gameplay enjoyment from ur new gpu.

I’d go: install that ssd—>gpu —>monitor—> case (poor front IO) —> cpu —> PSU (cause it will last for now, it’s not the worst)

the 80+ white psu's from evga aren't really that good, and if you're fast, there's a sale on cx(m)'s

that's the mx300... you should get the mx500

You aren’t wrong and yeah. Keep forgetting the CX’s are on sale. It’s why the 450W one is 16 bucks
