its not an issue whether it can be done, but to use the overclocking features, the support systems (VRM) prolly will prove inadequate.

I think someone (Der8auer?) got a 9900K working in a Z170 motherboard too.

Not necessarily, but in general definitely. There were a number of boards from Z270 that had perfectly adequate VRMs for a 9900K, and some Z390 boards don't.
