Could you post a picture of this "port"? You're probably looking at the docking port. You'd have to take the bottom of the laptop off to see the RAM slot.

Visit Crucial.com and put in your Dell Model.  It will tell you how much RAM you can use.

 

The Memory banks should be right next to eachother.  There is a chance the 2nd bank is little tricky and you have to move something to get better access.

 

Make sure you install / remove the sticks on a slanted angle
