Asus AC58U HELP

okk so my asus ac 58u has a usb slot.. i have heard thats for connecting storage. so i want to connect a 1tb hdd to that... whats possible with that? like i can store files via the computer there and access those via my phone asus app? is it meant for something like that? if yes how to set up? i am a noob at networking.
