Can a Dev give out free copies of an app

Hi,

 

This is a question that just came to my mind: Can an App Developer (I'm speaking of mobile apps for IOS or Android) gift free downloads of their paid apps to say, friends or family, business partners etc. This might be a pretty dumb and/or obvious question, in my defense, I have zero experience with software development. It just popped in my mind and now the question is nagging me. 

 

I'm mainly wondering about it since I feel that mobile app platforms are more closed down than Computer OSs.

I don't see why it's not possible. I think the paywall can be overcome by a free code generated by the developer on both mobile and PC.
