I need a recommendation for free software to backup my PC. I have a drive to use and the windows built in backup isn't working.

Depends what do you want to backup. If system (full drive backup) then Mactium Reflect is great. If personal files then any filemanager will be good or even Explorer. If you mean synchronize lot of data, Synchredible is fast and easy.

What is the error message on the built in one? The windows 7 backup and restore should be fine for most use and can backup to

For the OS and programs (ideally, they should be on their own drive or partition), I recommend imaging with Macrium Reflect Free.

 

For data, I recommend using a folder/file syncing program such as FreeFileSync.
