Windows 10

David_Kwan

Hi guys,

So when you build a PC you need to install windows correct?

If I buy a Windows 10 Home edition USB like this - (https://www.pbtech.com/product/OSYMST3701/Microsoft-Windows-Home-10-32-bit64-bit-English-USB) will the basic microsoft applications come with it?

Word, Excel etc.

Thanks in advance!

No, you have to get those separately.

Was it always like this? I've only bought pre-built pc's or laptops. I am planning to build my first PC so I wasn't sure if Microsoft office was included in the Windows 10 install.

So can I link the microsoft apps to an account? And if I upgrade the PC in the future I can just log in using the account and download the software?

I've only used Windows before so I'm more comfortable with it.

Office is a totally different product than Windows.

Also, most PC's I have bought do not come with Office.  They come with an Office demo.

I did not know that... Sigh looks like the cost for my first PC build just increased.

If you want Office, its primarily a subscription model anymore.

You CAN buy Office standalone for like $300, but it does not get feature updates like the subscription version does.

Also, if you buy the software of get a sub, you can install it on pretty much any PC.  Even if you upgrade, it can be installed on the new PC.

If you're not too attached to Microsoft Office, LibreOffice is a free alternative. Not quite as polished, but for free what more could you want.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You mean Office 365? I don't like the idea of having to pay subscription to use Microsoft Office...

I'll search that up. I'm currently using WPS Office on my laptop. Because after updating to Windows 10, the microsoft office disappeared from my laptop...

No, I mean full Office.  Office 365 is the cloud based office suite.

If you purchase Office outright, you will not get any updates except for security updates.

Office Pro licenses can be had for ~$100, if you dont mind using a dodgey key site.  The no updates limitation applies to these as well.

If you use Excel in any advanced way, LibreOffice will disappoint.

It is a License for a single PC.

If I were to make another PC in the future, can I just take the storage device it is installed in and put it in the new PC to use?

Best case, you register it with a MS/Outlook e-mail address and just de-activate the old PC, then install on new PC.

I know you can do that on the 5 PC licenses.

That sounds much better than what I thought of.

If I didn't register and something happened to the drive then would I have lost the Office software for good?

100% not sure.  You could probably use the telephone activation service, I believe its available in Australia.

I guess I should just register then. I'm from Fiji so there's no telephone activation service here. It's such a small Island Nation and there's hardly any tech stores here. And everything is expensive...
