580 microexplosions

Go to solution Solved by kb5zue,

I believe the french word for this problem is "toast".

This is the die on a used Asus RX 580 I bought.  It was running for a few minutes at a time before crashing after install.  Opening it up what looked like thermal paste clumps were actually tiny heat fractures in the surface of the die.  Will spackling these divots with thermal paste fix the crashing or is this card done for.

You need to contact the seller and get a refund. Unless you've cleaned it there was no thermal paste on that chip.

I cleaned it but it is still a scary sight.  I guess my real issue is where that silicone ends and the cores begin.  Stuck without any thermal paste options until morning.  As to how it happens I have to guess heat.  The paste was caked and dried and missing from most areas of the chip so I guess it ran with hot spots.  It was running stuttering high graphics before I took it apart to see what I could find so I am hoping for a thermal paste miracle.

Well ... fingers crossed its been running a game for 1 hour with new thermal paste plugging those divots.  Running 10c cooler then it was before pulling it as well.

I searched all night and some old 2005 forums when overclocking was more an underground art seemed to have similar issues that gave me hope to try.
