Need Linux For NAS

So I don't do a whole lot of Linux, and was wondering which one would be the best for a Home storage server?

Or can I just choose any Linux I want?

FreeNAS would probably be a better option than Linux.

 

I'm not aware of too many Linux distros you should avoid for a project like this, I'd imagine they would have some server-designed distros that you can install.

whata hrdwrae are you running? FreeNAS likes its drives are the same size, if you have mismatched drives look at unRAID, if you want free, id just run debian and what ever filesystem and programs you want.

Im running quad core, 12 GB of RAM, and a 250 SSD w/ a 500 GB HDD (for now)
