Just wondering, if anyone can recommend a service where you can send in a graphical design for a keycap and get it made? Alternatively, are there any home solutions to do so? I know it'll probably end up horribly expensive, but I have a one off idea as a joke with friends I want to make reality.

Depends on what you want made but there are custom keycap makers however the prices are quite high as they are usually one offs. A simple way would be to 3D print one or to get a blank set and send them for custom laser engraving.

I've been looking around, and nearest I've found so far is a commercial equipment manufacturer. Thinking cheapest might be an off-the-shelf generic cap with custom printing on it, I'll ask them what MOQ makes sense and take it from there. I now realise when I said design, it was ambiguous. I was referring to the content on the cap, but the cap itself would be a standard shape/size.

I've also found guides on making your own from resin and... suffice to say I'm not interested enough to go that route.

Don't have access to a 3D printer, and that wouldn't help me with the design. So printing on blanks would probably be my best bet at a low cost.

Oh, one other possibility I found were "relegendable" caps. These have a removable transparent cover so you could print and put a design under that. I haven't found a cheap source so far. There is a US seller on ebay but the shipping is as much as for LMG merch.

That... isn't exactly what I'm looking for :)

For now, printed off the shelf keycaps are the best balance between cost and availability. I found a place more locally that does custom printing so I'll give them a try:
