How Important is IPS?G-Sync

Hey guys,

 

So I am currently debating on what GPU/Display combo to go with for my next build. Budget is a rough $1800 for these two components. Question is, do I go with the optimal display I want (144hz, 3440x1440p UWQHD w. IPS & G-Sync) and a RTX 2080, or do I spring for a RTX 2080 TI with a 144hz Ultrawide FHD or QHD but without IPS/G-Sync to fit in the budget? What would you do? Thanks all.

GO with the better display. The 2080ti is stupid expensive. The performance jump form non ti to ti stands in ABSOLUTELY NO proportion to the price jump.

The better display will make you a much better/prettyer experience, wich a few more fps out of the ti wont

FOLDING MONTH 2021! GOGOGO and save on some heating costs 🙂

G-Sync is an adaptive refresh rate technology that attempts to smooth out the display if/when the frame rate drops below the display's standard refresh rate. 

 

IPS is a display type tech that provides better color depth and accuracy over TN panels, but at a cost to response time (usually IPS panels have response times of 5 milliseconds compared to the 1 millisecond of TN panels). Higher response time is usually only more noticeable in FPS (or similar) games or other fast paced games that can be intense/competitive. 

 

Higher resolutions look much nicer with practically everything, but are harder to run demanding games at these resolutions. A 2080 is roughly equivalent to a 1080 Ti, which can play 4k 60fps at high/very high settings quite well. 3440x1440 is wide 1440p (standard 1440p is 2560x1440), if I'm not mistaken, and looks quite nice.

 

2080 Ti is ridiculously expensive, and the sacrifice in display to afford one is not worth it in the slightest.

 

144Hz at 1440p could yield lower framerates at ultra settings in more demanding games, which is where G-Sync could be useful. 

 

Personally, I would get a 60Hz or 120Hz 1440p IPS display without G-Sync and a 2080. G-Sync isn't very useful if you can maintain your display's max refresh rate, so a lower refresh rate display to negate the need for G-Sync is great way to save money. But everyone is different, the display is something that can always be compromised on, and personal taste and fiscal ability is the best way to determine what features you should compromise on.

2080ti is a dumb purchase honestly. Get the better monitor

IPS is a display type tech that provides better color depth and accuracy over TN panels, but at a cost to response time (usually IPS panels have response times of 5 milliseconds compared to the 1 millisecond of TN panels). Higher resolutions look much nicer with practically everything, but are harder to run demanding games at these resolutions. 2080 Ti is ridiculously expensive, and the sacrifice in display to afford one is not worth it in the slightest.

 

144Hz at 1440p could yield lower framerates at ultra settings in more demanding games, which is where G-Sync could be useful. 

 

Personally, I would get a 60Hz or 120Hz 1440p IPS display without G-Sync and a 2080. G-Sync isn't very useful if you can maintain your display's max refresh rate, so a lower refresh rate display to negate the need for G-Sync is great way to save money. But everyone is different, the display is something that can always be compromised on, and personal taste and fiscal ability is the best way to determine what features you should compromise on.

Appreciate the input. I'm moving to this new display from a non-ips no-gsync 1080p 60hz 23ms monitor so I'm sure it will be a huge leap. Decided to go with a better display rather than 2080 TI.

I just got exactly that: Predator 34" curved 144hz, 3440x1440p UWQHD w. IPS & G-Sync from NewEgg and a RTX 2080 Founder's edition direct from NVIDIA and spent about $1630 for both, and it's fast and beautiful.   I don't think you will regret it.  Yeah, the 2080 GPU is slower than the TI version...but not by a lot and you get fit the better monitor into your budget that way.

A bit of a catch 22.

 

I own a RTX 2080 ti, GTX 1080 ti and a 3440 X 1440 monitor so testing to get the highest average refresh rate is easy for me.

 

A RTX 2080/ 1080  ti can't even run a 3440 X 1440 100hz monitor. Average frame rates on AAA games are about 80.

I am ready for the 3440 X 1440 144hz monitors but I will use 2 GTX 1080 tis. My RTX 2080 ti does not come close to 2 1080 tis in SLI.

 

I am expecting to pay about a $1200 for a 3440 X 1440 144hz monitor. 120hz monitors are about $1000 now.

 

If I were you I would get a RTX 2080 with a 3440 X 1440 100hz monitor.

Is there a new Predator out that I don't know about? 

There are only 2 versions still on newegg. One is 60hz overclockable to 100hz and the other is 60hz overclockable to 120hz.
