System upgrade

Hello, I'm looking to upgrade my PC in order to play at 4k or 1440p depending on the game. There's a sale near me I'm looking to pick up 2 RX 580s (8gb variants) for 160$ each, a really sweet deal. I plan to use them together in crossfire. My current specs are:

I7 6700k

Msi z270 tomahawk motherboard

GTX 970

16gbs of ram

1 NVME m.2 ssd

3 sata 7.2k rpm hard drives

PSU Thermaltake smart se 630wž

Just buy another 970 and go SLI?

no sli is flaky. get a 1080ti and overclock the cpu and bam your all set. the cpu is still a good chip and has another year or two left.

i'd say more than 2 years in todays day and age.
it's incredible how long pc hardware stays relevant

A 1080ti would set me back 700$ while the RX 580 cf would only 320$ and the difference would be less than 15fps on most games

Yep, I had an i5 2500k from 2011 and it could still put up with most AAA titles on 1080p

For the money $320... I'd go GTX1070 probably.  SLI and/or Crossfire are just not consistently worth it , IMO.

Well an RX 580 crossfire would be much stronger than the 1070 and for the same price I'd rather go with the 580s

Sure, if you can get Crossfire support in each game you play at more than 50% from the 2nd card.  Yeah.

 

I prefer an always good vs a sometimes great.  Get those 580's and rock it out then.

Thank you for the feedback, but since I'd be using it for 4k and 1440p I don't think the 1070 could satisfy my needs. Thanks again for the reply

Here's the blunt truth, running two 580 card in Crossfire, in the rare instances it works, you'll have an AMAZING experience.  The other 95% of the time, you will see either no difference between a standard 580 or actually get lower performance.  In the few games that properly support it, you'll get some great performance.  In games that mostly support, you'll get great performance is FPS dips down BELOW 10!!!  In games that scale with it at all, you may actually see a decrease in FPS compared to one card. 

 

Also, your cooling solution better be perfect, and your motherboard better have ample space between the slots.  Watch these videos and make your decision.  And i didn't hand pick these videos, these are literally the most recent videos by reputable youtubers who have covered this topic. 

 

 

 

 

It's not worth it, all these videos are from last month or so.
