Okay here's what's happened, I have a Maxtor 320GB IDE hard drive that kept disappearing from Windows Explorer. So I was thinking it was something with the drive. So I needed to get everything off, so I bought a 2TB. I took the drive out of the computer and placed it in my hard drive doc along with the 2TB.
I formatted the 2TB with NTFS, I'm using Windows 10 Home, and I used Active File Recovery to create an image of my Maxtor drive. It created the image with no problems, and then restored just a few directories that I will really needed and checked in Windows Explorer and everything was there. After a restart I went to access the new drive, and it was not there. It was marked as RAW! So I tried it again and it did the same thing. Whenever I would scan the drive the first time it showed Data (2) and then the next time I did it showed Data (3). I just tried to copy the documents and genealogy folder but they were not showing up as folders. I Put the 2TB in the PC and it was doing the same thing for one time it would show up, then next time it wouldn't. Could that be a power supply problem or a motherboard problem.

I'm at the point that I don't want to do anything with it right now because I do not want to damage anything on the drive. I know things canafter still be recovered, what software should I use or should I send it to a data recovery? I have My Documents, which has all my pictures, etc. and genealogy folder with its own pictures.

Who can help me out?

Not sure I undertstand...

So you bought a new HDD and want to transfer back up from old HDD to new HDD ?

And the old HDD is sometimes disappearing sometimes not ?

Just put both HDDs in the same computer, boot to windows, and copy files from old HDD to new HDD.

If you don't see files or the old HDD doesn't show up all the time, it is very possible it is almost dead.

Try booting in LINUX Ubuntu and retrieve the files from there. Linus is more powerful.

Lastly you can also try to take the HDD and put it in the freezer for 1 hour. Then take it frozen and connect it to your PC and its possible files will be available, ive done that multiple times with dead hdds.

I could do that however the IDE drive shows up as RAW and I tried twice to get the data off only to have the new 2TB show up as RAW after recovery
