So this is my current build:

I’m going to upgrade the cpu and motherboard to a R5 2600X and Asus Crosshair VII. Should I upgrade anything else while I’m at it? And do I need a new windows key when changing mobo?

I wouldn't upgrade, think about this. If you upgrade to a new R5 2600X, sure you gain performance but how much? Does 20-25% percent performance justify the price tag that comes with it? If not, then no. If yes, then yes.

Why are you changing cpu? Are you not getting what you want out of your pc? The 2600 won't give you a super huge boost in gaming performance if that's your reason

My 6600k won’t keep up with the GTX it’s bottlenecking it. The 2600X will be temporary until 3000 series come.

The 6600k should not be bottlenecking your 1080. What resolution do you play at? Even at 4k, it should not be bottlenecking it. Also it depends on what game you play, some games are more CPU intensive then others. What games are you playing? Also have you tired overclocking your 6600k?

Logically speaking this upgrade doesn't make sense. But, if you're all strapped with cash... Why not updrade it with something better? Perhaps 9980E?

So get the 2600. You can overclock it for similar performance. I did exactly what you're doing but I got the 2600X at the same price as the 2600, otherwise, there's no reason unless you're not overclocking and/or sticking with the stock cooler.

You need to upgrade your RAM as well. I would go ahead and get the best that you can afford so that it runs great on the next gen Ryzen. I went with 3200 c14 Flare X since they're great for overclocking and Ryzen likes faster memory.

Consider getting an 970 EVO or similar NVMe drive. It's not the most noticeable difference when it comes to every day tasks, but if you're upgrading to a nice PC it's a nice feature to have, my system is extremely responsive no matter what I'm doing because although I'm only using the 2600X, every other part in it is top of the line.

If your build was a pre-built then you might nee another key. At least I did, but i changed everything and tried carrying over my 970 EVO SSD.

Good luck.

Uhm... Its the other way around, the higher the resolution the less intensive is for the CPU since the GPU hits its wall faster. So it should be something along the lines "even at 1080p it shouldn't be bottlenecking"

What I ment to say is, different games utilize CPU power differently.
