Which Drive? Quantity Vs Speed

I am planning a pc build and i was checking ssd's and hdd's. i already have a smallish SSD (256GB) so i can get my OS and some games on it. so i checked some prices and found a good ssd vs hdd comparison for price. 8TB WD Gold is $302 and a similarly priced 2TB drive from Samsung(860Evo at $299) is available. i know its a bit of an impossible question because they offer vastly different purposes but what would you say is the better deal? 8TB vs 2TB for the same $300?

 

 

ps-chose the unnecessary Gold variant just for higher storage amount and maintaining higher HDD performance

Well, do you actually have something to fill the 8TB with? Hell, do you have something to fill 4TB with, even? Personally, I'd go with the SSD and invest into a separate NAS later on for rarely-used bulk-storage. You can fit a whole lot games and stuff into a 2TB SSD and load-times will be vastly, vastly superior to any spinning rust-drive.

I am a bit of a hoarder when it comes to games and movies and such, in my current PC i have a 256gb SSD (Full) 1 TB WD Black (Full) 1 TB WD Blue (Full) and another Half Full 1TB WD Black. I would definitely enjoy the SSD speeds

If it is just for large sized movie files, documents, photos and such, I'd get a high capacity HDD.

Movies won't play faster, when put on an SSD.

 

I would put your games onto an SSD, due to the faster load times, etc.

Get the larger 8TB drive and juggle your games. 

 

Steam has a feature where you can move a game from 1 drive to another, it makes it easy to cache games you don't play often onto your HDD, then just move them back over to your SSD when you want to play them, then move back when you need more space. 

 

I struggled with a 240GB SSD for years using this method, a good option is getting a 2nd 240GB ($40 on Amazon, Kingston A400) and put it in raid 0 with your existing 240GB, it will give you 450GB total and 150% read speeds you were getting before.

 

SSDs are pretty reliable, but always make sure to have a backup. I'm sure you could dedicate a 480gb chunk of your 3TB spinning for a SSD backup.

 

For your low storage space, keep your documents/photos/downloads/pictures/music folders on your spinning storage (since none of that needs to be fast), you can right click on them, click properties and point to a folder on your non C drives for those shortcuts to point to. Also makes it really easy to reinstall windows since all of your files are already backed up
