Macbook Issues

For starters the MacBook runs on 10.13.5, and up till this week it has been running fine. My sister uses it for cyber school and has been mostly using the notepad program for Mac over Word to do most of her school work. She been having issues though with file corruption of some of the more recent work she has done. I'm wondering what could be the causes and what I can do to help her out with possibly recovering these corrupt files.
