CPU upgrade: Is it worth it?

Go to solution Solved by GoldenLag,

If you are experiencing bottlenecks in modern titles the 2600 will be better. Though i recommend getting the B450 variant of the Tomahawk board as it is noticeably better and you dont risk having the wrong BIOS for you CPU

So, in my current setup I have an I5-7400. It seems to be bottlenecking pretty hard, so I plan to upgrade to a ryzen 5 2600. I know I have to get a new motherboard too, already have one in mind, in case anyone's wondering it's the MSI *gaming* B350 tomahawk. I just wanted to know if this is actually a good idea or not...I guess I might as well most a simple list of my current build huh?

If anyone has a better CPU suggestion, I'm all ears...of course, if it's sub $200USD.

So, in most modern titles like, AC origins, rise of the tomb raider, my cpu hangs around 90% to 100%...sometimes the games crash for what seems like no reason. Black ops 3 does this from time to time.

One more thing! Gaming is my main focus, I might do streaming if my internet was crap.

Just a simple list:

GPU: EVGA GTX 1060 SSC

CPU: I5-7400

RAM: PNY Anarchy DDR4 32GB 8x4 kit. overkill i know.

MOBO: MSI B150 M3

I mean, I'm pretty sure that's the lowest end i5 7th gen there is. You have plenty of room to go up.

Every single 6th and 7th gen intel i7 cpu cells for less than $200 on ebay. Both the 7600 and 6600 often sell for ~160 USD. (Of course people ask for more... those ones don't sell.) Oddly enough, the 6600k often sells for cheaper than the 6600, and even though you couldn't overclock it, it should be a nice chip.

so, you're tellin me that this is actually one of the lowest 7th gens I can get. Why in the hell did I pay $200 for this...anyway, i'll look into ebay, not a big fan of ebay, but i'll check it out. Also, just makin sure here, anything that I get, could actually be better than the 7400 I currently have?

Typically intel chips are very durable. I've never had a used one from ebay come damaged. (And I've probably ordered.... 100 over the years?)  And if you buy a non k version you can just about guarantee it wasn't heavily overclocked and abused.
