SSD NVME NAS/SERVER??

Hey,

 

I am going through different hardware setup configs for a FreeNAS server.  I plan on taking an old x99 gaming pc and using that system for this.  I have a Asus Hyper M.2 x16 Card Expansion and I was wondering if I could use 4 1tb nvme drives and run them raid 10 for the server?

 

Any thoughts.

what are you planning on storing on the NAS?

Well i plan on storing steam library, vm's and a few other things.  I just wanna know if nvme ssds will have a decent life expectancy or if i will be swapping them out frequently.

You can do this, but unless your running 40gbe+, your probably better off getting sata ssds, or hdds and using those drives as a cache.

NVME won't affect the life span, its just a different protocol. 

 

What drives are you thinking of getting?

 

From those uses, you probably won't need that much endurance,

well i will be running 10gbe but not 40  wish i could.  I just want to had stupid hardware in it.

also why freeNAS? 

 

If you have a windows client, id run windows server as you get better smb servers, which should be a bit faster here.

Id personally get sata ssds, the difference is tiny in terms of speed here, and there much cheaper, but nothing really wrong with those drives.

alright.  thanks for the input.  Just thinkin of different things to use.
