Products can be bought with extended warranties depending on if the retailer is trustworthy of replacing it & if they support it after the warranty has been expired.

Cat topples pc by pulling some wires. BAM instant loss (it's a scenario...not saying a realistic one though...lol)

i might be wrong here so if someone can clarify that would be awesome but with insurance if something goes wrong isn't it based on the value of the product and because pc tech rapidly and constantly advances products lose their value very very quickly

Insurance for a PC? No.

The components themselves have their own manufacturer warranty, and if you bought a complete PC from Dell, NCIX, Lenovo, etc it as a whole would have its own warranty from the company. Otherwise if you have home insurance it covers you for total value of goods (in case of flood, fire, theft, etc) which you pay a premium depending on the amount you want to be covered for.

My friend in Austria had his apt burglarized. He had insured his TV, Xbox and computer, all of which were taken and reimbursed by the insurance company. It could happen to anybody

You friend had renters insurance, he didn't have individual insurance plans on his devices. Renters/Home owners insurance is what will cover your stuff if it ever got stolen

If your products get damaged or stops working then that's what the warranty and extended warranties are for through the manufacturers

This.

Also, @T.Vengeance an act like that would more than likely NOT be covered by the insurance policy. Otherwise you could just topple your tower yourself and make a claim.

I believe home insurance covers loses from burglaries.

As far as I know, no Insurance company offers insurance on independent items (that's what warranties are for).

Yes but if you don’t have renters or homeowners insurance and aren’t interested in either, many insurance companies offer standalone insurance on specific valuables. For a yearly fee, plus a deductible, you can get insurance on your laptop to protect against theft, and any accidental damage like drops and spills. Many policies also cover flood, fire, or power surge damage.

  • 4 weeks later...

I'll assume we're talking about accidental damage protection since all consumer electronics are guaranteed against manufacturing defects.

As for the PC, if it's custom built your only real option is to go to an insurance company and buy a generic insurance policy.  Insurance companies will cover anything if you're willing to pay; just be sure to read EVERYTHING and, if there's anything you're even a little bit uncertain about, ASK because you don't want to get hung out to dry in some legal loophole.  If your desktop was pre-built then you have three options for extended coverage; the manufacturer, the retailer, or after-market protection from a company like http://www.squaretrade.co.uk/.

Due to the tendency towards thinner and lighter construction ADP protection for a laptop has become a bit more difficult.  http://www.zdnet.com/pc-laptops-and-accidental-damage-best-and-worst-warranties-2014-7000011910/

One additional note, Asus' free 1 year laptop ADP has some serious complaints across the tech forums.

Hey I get accidental damage policies offered for my mobiles and they're a lot less expensive than most nice PC builts. Speaking as a clumsy person who lost a nice monitor and rig due to accidental damage (a.k.a. came home blind drunk and knocked the desk over) I can appreciate the idea behind this.

The chances are that something catastrophic happens to your computer is very slim. You would end up paying more for insurance for the life of the computer than you would to replace a part or the entire thing due to an accident.

That depends entirely on the person, read my example: The chances of me getting back home drunk out of my mind trying to crawl back into my bed are actually pretty significant.

You wouldn't be covered by most insurance policies if you're intoxicated.

Well I wouldn't say that on my claim obviously! I'm just clumsy and disorganized enough that I leave shit in the middle of the room.

It'd be much to easy to abuse, that's why no one does it :P

It wouldn't take much for an under writer to find posts like the one you made, and either deny your claim or file fraud charges.

Home insurance doesn't cover accidental damage. It'd cover theft, and water damage but that's about it.
