new build gpu

arukaen

Hello,

I'm in the process of creating a new gaming rig and I'm stuck on what GPU I should get. I'm torn between 1080 Ti and RTX 2080 Ti. What census on the new RTX?

You might want to wait and see what happen at CES. Rumor is that AMD will be announcing a new range of GPUs (Navi) aimed at RTX 2070 or maybe 2080. Even if you are going to buy Nvidia it's worth waiting a little as there will hopefully be a price drop before the AMD cards are launched.

As far as 1080 Ti vs 2080 Ti goes: the 2080 Ti much faster than the 1080 Ti, even when it was brand new. If you want the fastest GPU in the world then get the 2080 Ti. Nothing is faster right now and probably nothing will be pre 2020 except the RTX Titan when it launches. The 1080 Ti is approx the same speed as the 2080 (non Ti), but is an older card without ray tracing features, although it does have more VRAM.

Gaming Rig:CPU: Xeon E3-1230 v2¦RAM: 16GB DDR3 Balistix 1600Mhz¦MB: MSI Z77A-G43¦HDD: 480GB SSD, 3.5TB HDDs¦GPU: AMD Radeon VII¦PSU: FSP 700W¦Case: Carbide 300R

I dont really have experience with the 1080 ti either the 2080 ti. I mostly heard that RTX decreases your FPS enormly. If you dont wanna spend too much money on a GPU, i would advise you a GTX 1080 ti. It could be a problem with RTX on if you have more than 1 Monitor running on 4k.

If you dont really care about money to spend on a GPU i advise you to buy an 2080 ti because it has more performence than a normal 1080 ti.

So I'm currently not gaming on 4K. Just 1080P on a 32inch.

Both the 1080 Ti and 2080 Ti are EXTREME overkill for 1080p 60Hz. If you aren't going to upgrade soon, just get a 1070 or 1070 Ti at the maximum.

I will eventually upgrade to a 4K monitor, just waiting for the prices to come down. My current 32 is a 1080P 75hz.

The price of the 2080 Ti is more than most 4K monitors.

Also in order to get decent performance(not bottlenecking the GPU) the rest of your PC will need to be pretty decent. What CPU do you have right now?

For the CPU, I'm currently inbetween 9700K or the 9900K. I haven't settled on one yet because I am still playing around with the GPU.

If all you are doing is gaming then I would get the 9700K and spend the money you save compared to the 9900K on good cooling (water). You want the highest possible clockspeeds for gaming. Hyper-threading is useless on most games, 8 cores/threads is more than many game engines can handle anyway.

While the main use for the computer is gaming, I do dual boot to Linux for my 9-5. I run VMs and compile software.

Might be best to get the 9900K then because VMs and Compilation will benefit from hyper-threading, not by much though. You should look at Linux benchmarks to see if it is really worse the extra money.

If you have the money, get a 2080ti.  All the quality issues it had at launch are pretty much gone, and it is the best card available right now.  Do NOT get a 2080, at that point you might as well save a ton of money and get a 1080ti used.

Trying to avoid the used market because this will be a "business" purchase. So I want to buy things only that I can get new directly from Amazon, Newegg, etc

That answers your question then.  Get a 2080ti.

It's 1400 USD for the 2080 Ti. That's 70% of my budget.

...then, why did you make it an option in the first place?!?!?!  haha.  "Should I get a 1080ti or a 2080ti?"  implies that the price of a 2080ti fits your budget.
