New Video Idea - Realistic Bandwidth Requirements for Home Internet

Hey guys,

 

I was listening to the millionth ad ever for home internet with <insert name of company here>. They were saying "With <Home Internet Package 3000> you can surf and game and stream and wash your dog all at the same time without worrying about slowdowns!" I've been hearing these ads for years, all the while bandwidth has increased significantly, and (at least in Canada) so have prices for these packages. My video recommendation is to run some high-def video streaming, some high-bandwidth gaming, and a couple other computers running other stuff (whatever internet usage you think appropriate - upload YouTube video maybe?) and measure the bandwidth being used. For instance, Telus is currently offering a residential package for 750Mbps w/ 1 TB data for $140/mo!!! My guess is that almost no residential customer would ever need that. And Shaw is 600mbps w/ unlimited data for $100+ per month. Probably still huge overkill. The US can't be all that different. Let's see if we really need all this bandwidth and the associated costs.

:( In Australia the best speed i have achieved is 32 mbps, most of the time it sits between 10 and 18, and my household is paying $130 a month (around 90 USD)

I for one would much rather have 1gbit than 1Mb/s. It's not that you will always be using it all but being able to download something and upload without crippling the whole network is nice. Now multiply this for a family plus IoT devices and boom 200Mb/s isn't so much

Well, some people just like overkill. Like me. I run a 500/500mb line here, and just for 13 bucks a month more compared to the standard 80/8 line

I have 150 Mbps down, 10 Mbps up with Xfinity(Comcast) for like $64 with 1Tb cap. That includes 10 channels on their streaming service as well. This is more than enough for our usage. Hell we had 75 Mbps down for like ever and only got the faster package when they offered a free upgrade. However, in the time of 4K streaming, at least with Netflix you need something like 25-30 Mbps for each 4K stream. 

 

You would think no customer could use the speed. HOWEVER surfing DSLreports.com I have come across people uses 10s of Tb of data a month or more. Some people I am convinced download the entirety of the internet every month. Im sure our usage would be more if we didnt have the lame ass cap. 

 

Oh and my provider has the holy grail of internet if you can afford it. You need to be within 1/3 of a mile of a fiber node. Its $500 for installation + $500 for activation and $299 (3 year contract)  a month +taxes and fees for 2Gbps symmetrical Fiber. OH and due to the high cost of entry they decided not to cap it. LOL. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
