Help with ugprade for my i5 4460

Hello

I have an i5 system from 4 years or so ago and  thinking of upgrading. I can spend about $400 or so, maybe less,  to get an r5 2600 with the ram and mobo or I can spend about $160-$300 and buy a 4790k.

I'm leaning towards the 4790k since its cheaper. I DON'T have a z97 mobo so i can't overclock it but the 4ghz is nice and a greater boost over my current 3.2ghz.

Is the 4790k at base clock still good in 2018?

I mostly game and don't want to be bottlenecked by my cpu.  I've seen benchmarks and the 4460 can't keep up when going above 1080p and with newer titles.  I saw a comparison involving the 4790k and it did ok but I wamt to know if i should just make the jump to ddr4 and get a modern system for better future proofing as the 4790k feels like a temporary solution.

So should I get the 4790k or just go for ryzen?

Thanks

Depends what GPU you're pairing with it. GTX1060, GPU bound,.. 1070, GPU bound for the most part... 1080/1080Ti/2070 onwards... You want more Singlecore performance.

Example. I'm on a 4790K (4.5Ghz, 2400Mhz DDR3) and a GTX1070 (Stock)

CHEWS THRU MANY GAMES FINE. 80-120fps easily for many titles these days...

However... Assassins Creed (Origins/Odyssey) and Battlefield 1/5 and such HEAVY CPU titles,... I see GPU usage drops there too... (1080p Ultra)

Origins for example,. towards 70fps and up over 85fps,...,.. CPU goes up trying to drive information,.. 90-100% CPU at times...causing GPU usage drops to 80-90%.

Set details and resolution scaling to have it sit around 55-65fps (more GPU bound) and my CPU usage comfortable sits lower,..and GPU Usages stay at 99%.

4790K should be used for relatively high refresh gaming, but not the 165hz kinda gaming....(needing better singlecore performance usually) the 100-120fps ranges are quite attainable for many games,.. and hard to run CPU ruining titles are still good for 70-90fps for such badly made titles....

I'll also update with I have an Ultrawide 1080p (2560x1080) and was GPU bound always in Origins.. without CPU spikes.
Just force yourself to be GPU bound and you'll find the CPU is good for 60fps-100fps across many titles.

Play at 4K, you can use way less CPU,... but at 1080p with a Beast 1440p GPU,.. you will have many frames,.. but not all of them.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

You'll be fine with the 4790k, not overclocking will degrade the value and potential performance, but I think it's still a good choice. I recently got an i7 2600k myself, it's just fine for 60Hz and usually handles much more. Maybe check the locked i7s if they're cheaper. You'll be fine up to a GTX 1070 or so, I plan on pairing a GTX 1080 with my 2600k@4.4GHz for ultrawide gaming, so about the same performance as a GTX 1070 at 1920x1080. Obviously the R5 is better, but if it's much more expensive, just save money and go with the i7.

Looking at prices on eBay it looks like a 4790k can be had for about $200 or so. At least, in the US. Now, not having a Z97 board for overclocking does limit some of the potential. As another option maybe shoot for just an i7-4790 without the k? You give up a bit of frequency, but you can get one for around $135 right now. That's still a lot more frequency and you get hyper threading over your current i5.

With that extra $70 you can buy some sweet RGB fans.... that'll get you like 10 FPS more for sure ;)

Don't skimp and get a non-Z board. YOU DO ABSOLUTELY WANT THE HIGHER MEMORY FREQUENCY SUPPORT
This makes QUITE the difference alone... (Especially when your CPU IS LEGIT being Tapped a lot with Gaming/Encoding)

It all adds up,.. don't ruin your experience, your only as fast as your limiting factor....

They say memory doesn't add up to much... (Can be true if looking at 1600Mhz to1866Mhz jumps,.. or 2133 to 2400, but 1333/1600 to 2400Mhz is a Decent jump, and games DO respond in kind)

Get a K

Get Fast RAM (2133-2400)
Enjoy the 4790 factory overclock, (iE Skip the 4770) and Get the 4790, / K

From a 4790K owner...

If I'm going to buy a new mobo I might as well get ryzen

I would agree to that too.
I'm just stating that you WILL LOSE OUT on MaxPotential if you don't get a Z-Chipset for a 4th Gen i7-K

So you should then go for Ryzen.

I only found a price of $160 for the non-k,  I didn't see the $135

I'll check it out and if it looks good i guess I'll get it to save money

I'm gaining 0.4ghz and it turbos to 4 0

It looks attractive
