Looking to upgrade my processor.

r3v01t

Hey everyone, first-time poster here.

After a decently long period of time with my current processor (Core i5-4440), I've decided that it's time for an upgrade.

I have $300 USD currently, and am split between two processors, the Core i7-6700k and the Ryzen 5-2600. Now normally I would go with the generally cheaper option (the Ryzen 5-2600) however, I don'tt have a motherboard for it, which may end up costing me roughly near the price I can get an i7-6700k for. I currently have a board compatible with the 6700k, so it would be a straightforward purchase of the processor. My primary focus is gaming, however I often work in photoshop and blender from time to time. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

go with the i7, don't buy another motherboard, it'll save money and intel has better single threaded preformance, which is good in games.

then go with the i7, it has better per-core performance which is better for gaming anyway, and it shouldn't be a slouch in blender or photoshop either

I recommend you wait for CES before you buy anything

Assuming you have a second motherboard that works with the 6700k, right?

Because the board for your 4460 won't work with it.

6700k is a good option since your work doesn't need a TON of cores.

Yeah, I've got a board in storage for the 6700k along with compatible RAM.

Now that I have a general idea of how the processor would perform under the tasks I primarily partake in (thanks to you and the other replies), I'll hold off for a little bit longer and will most likely go ahead with the 6700k unless something else catches my eye.

I hope you're getting the CPU off eBay, because it's not worth paying whatever newegg is selling it for.

What is the motherboard you have for it?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Yeah, I'm definitely getting it off eBay, it's not worth paying $340+ on it.

I've got an MSI B150M Bazooka, heard it can't fully utilize overclocking, but I'll probably get a new motherboard later on.

B150 board can't overclock, you need a Z-series board for that

Yeah, found that out. Isn't the end of the world, though, I'll attempt to pile some cash up later on to purchase a new one.
